Conservative thinkers are trying to bring intellectual coherence to the Trumpian moment under the banner of nationalism. But can it be cleansed of its darker currents?
Adam Serwer🍝If you thought that my description of the main role of the conservative intelligentsia as being post hoc justifications of whatever the base wants was unfair, read the quotes in this piece. Pathetic.
Prominent figures from Tucker Carlson to John Bolton gathered at the Ritz-Carlton to declare war on the conservative establishment and lay the groundwork for a new intellectual movement on the right.
Adam Serwer🍝Time to stick it to the elites by demanding we *lowers glasses* ban non-white immigration at this political conference I’m attending at *checks notes* The Ritz in Washington with *squints* extremely well paid tv personalities
Trump associates predict more, not less, of the race-baiting madness.
Adam Serwer🍝When writers of color said this in 2016, white reporters across the political spectrum got huffy and offended on behalf of diner interviewees everywhere. Now everyone basically accepts it as a given, including those who use crappy euphemisms to describe it axios.com/donald-trump-r…pic.twitter.com/QYyAOuqUuU
I understand the moral outrage behind wanting to call the president's tweets racist. But I disagree.
Adam Serwer🍝the problem with this argument is it's not making a case for facts vs opinion, but consensus vs controversy. Some people disagree that x is racist, so you can't say it because it's an opinion. But if there is consensus that x is racist, it's fine to label.
The White House insisted allegations that it wanted to add a citizenship question to the survey for political reasons were conspiracy theories, right up until the moment the president confirmed them.
Adam Serwer🍝The Census case, the Trump administration lied to the Supreme Court, and four of the Justices were furious that the other five didn’t accept those lies as gospel, calling critics’ reasoning conspiratorial. Then Trump confirmed his administration had lied.
Trump essentially admits that his administration’s goal is to increase white power, and Sunday shows do nothing
Adam Serwer🍝The Sunday Shows apparently ignored Trump's Census admission, that the citizenship question was about "redistricting" aka diluting minority voting power, rather than "enforcing the voting rights act" (lmao)
