The German Research Vessel Polarstern returns to port after drifting for a year in Arctic sea-ice.
MOSAiC Expedition"The sea-ice is dying" - #MOSAiCexpedition leader Markus Rex
"The region is at risk. We were able to witness how the ice disappears and in areas where there should have been ice that was many metres thick, and even at the #NorthPole - that ice was gone."
An international science expedition reached the North Pole on Wednesday after project leaders noticed shrinking sea-ice conditions and "surprisingly loose" ice cover that would make the trip possible.
The route taken was over northern Greenland...
MOSAiC Expedition“'For this region, the current situation is historic,' said Thomas Wunderlich captain of the German research icebreaker #Polarstern [...]. we’re finding extended stretches of open water, reaching nearly to the Pole.'”
MOSAiC Expedition❗️#MOSAiCexpedition Update
The MOSAiC team started the dismantling of the ice camp and evacuation of the floe. We will now shift our focus to the last remaining puzzle piece in the annual cycle of #Arctic sea ice: the start of the ice formation process.
MOSAiC mission will return to its frozen platform but the disruption, to exchange teams, will create a gap in its unique climate data set.
MOSAiC Expedition"#Polarstern, the German research vessel central to the #MOSAiCexpedition, will temporarily leave its position in the ice to exchange its crew. At the same time, it will be forced to abandon the research camp where it has been frozen since October."

MOSAiC Expedition1/3: We have finally succeeded to obtain this unique data set: for the first time we have gathered a full, 3-dimensional image of both sides of our floe. Fiddling them together with 3D visualization software has been a dream for long. 👉 bit.ly/38siH7E
The first leg of the MOSAiC expedition was completed in the middle of December 2019. Crew members and scientist of the second leg are on board now and working hard to continue the work after celebrating Christmas and New Year’s eve on board...

Summer sea ice could vanish later this decade, with disastrous consequences. It all depends on the physics of ice.
MOSAiC Expedition"But the #ice does not whisper. It screams. Whenever the pressure builds up, you can hear a large hissing sound — almost like the screeching from an exploding soda bottle. It sizzles. It pops. It groans. And it does so loudly." - @ShannonWHall

The panel, including two scientists who will phone in from the frozen icebreaker, will discuss why we need to better understand #Arctic changes.
Some projections say that by 2040 the Arctic Ocean may see its first ice-free summer in modern history. That means mixed emotions for young scientists seeing the ice for the first time.
MOSAiC Expedition"'I thought I might cry actually when I first saw sea ice," says @RobbieMallett, who studies sea ice at the @ES_UCL using satellites."
