Flying is a highly controversial topic in climate debates. It accounts for around 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, but 3.5% when we take non-CO2 impacts on climate into account.
Transport accounts for almost one-quarter of global CO2 emissions. For individuals, it can be the largest part of their carbon footprint. But if you need to travel, what is the lowest-carbon way to do so? We take a look at the data.

Our World in DataWhich form of transport has the lowest carbon footprint?
In our latest article we compare the emissions of different ways to travel.
For example, taking the Eurostar train from London to Paris reduces emissions by ~96% vs. taking a flight.

Testing for COVID-19 is our window onto the pandemic and how it is spreading. Without data on who is infected by the virus, and how many people are dying from the infection, we have no way of understanding the pandemic. Without testing there is no...
Our World in DataSince the early days of this pandemic we are building and maintaining the dataset on COVID-19 testing for countries around the world.
Now our dataset has been published in the academic journal @Nature Scientific Data.

Transport accounts for around one-fifth of global CO2 emissions. But where do these emissions come from, and how might they change in the coming decades?
Lately I’ve been using the analogy of a museum to describe Our World in Data. A museum offers its visitors a variety of experiences: you can book a guided tour and hear all the detailed stories behind the artworks, explore for yourself and wander...
Levelized cost of energy (LCOE) estimates the average cost per unit of energy generated across the lifetime of a new power plant. It is measured in 2019 US$ per kilowatt-hour.
The Living Planet Index (LPI) provides a measure of biodiversity based on the average change in populations of species over time. The index value is measured relative to 20,811 populations of 4,392 species in 1970 (i.e. 1970 = 1).

Our World in DataWe teamed up with our friends at @Kurz_Gesagt again to make a video about climate change.
It looks at the 4 factors driving CO₂ emissions, and how we can use these levers to find solutions.

Shown is when same-sex sexual acts stopped being considered a criminal offence. Some countries never contained a criminalising provision in their Penal Codes, while others consciously removed the criminalising provisions.

It’s often argued that life expectancy across the world has only increased because child mortality has fallen. But this untrue. The data shows that life expectancy has increased at all ages.
