Seven rules (plus one) to be online in the age of pandemic and self-isolation
Carl MillerI've written @WiredUK with some thoughts about how to use the Internet during the corona virus - in part thinking about what the Internet is doing to us and our mental health, in part about how we use it to affect others.
Following the 2016 election season, Americans realized the powerful influence of fake news, with the nation at large questioning the extent to which it may have swayed the election.
Carl MillerThis is absolutely nuts: local news sites have commercially collapsed, been bought up by dark money and turned into hyper-partisan political influence vectors.
This is going to be a massive battleground over US2020, there's no doubt about it.
There will be cuts to Radio 5 Live and BBC Two’s Newsnight as part of an £80m savings drive.
Carl MillerThis is horrible news - the BBC is one of the most important institutions the UK has created, and one of our major contributions to the world. It’s really time now to stick up for it.
BBC News to close 450 posts as part of £80m savings drive
Crypto Curry Club PM with Carl Miller on police cyber-crime raids, working with the BBC to get data back and state manipulation of Wikipedia
Carl MillerOver a curry on Feb 19th, I'm going to be talking about cyber-crime raids, trying to get my data back, information warfare on Wikipedia and some of the investigations I've done with the BBC
Come Along! It'll be fun
Carl MillerIf you have language skills in Swahili, Kikuyu, Oromo, Leo, Somali, Bangla, Handi, Urdu, Nepali, Odia or Santhali and want to work with me and @ISDglobal to try to keep the Internet free of hate, check out these new jobs
Local democracy in Newham is improving to better engage, involve and represent all our residents.
Carl MillerI’m part of a Commission this year held by @NewhamLondon looking at how local democracy can better include people in decisions - including via tech. If you have a view, ideas or an interest in this - please get involved!
Why fake science spreads faster online than the truth
Carl MillerI'm part of what should be a really interesting programme on Radio 4 this evening. Presented by @AngelaDSaini, it's called the Misinformation Virus - about the many ways that truth is under attack in the digital age.
Carl MillerFirst Draft’s analysis is that 88% of Tory targeted ads are misleading.
Not making a party political point here, sure other parties do it too. But it does show how, online, the campaigns are getting away with claims they could never make on TV
Carl MillerFor the BBC this year, I've met Kosovo's fake news merchants, tried to reclaim my data, dug into the manipulation of Wikipedia, visited Taiwan's digital democrats, investigated Uber and crunched millions of Tweets.
You can watch them all here
Social media has opened up vast social divisions and brought democracy to its knees. In Taiwan, the people are fighting back
Carl MillerI've written a longer read for @WiredUK on the 2 lessons Taiwan's digital democrats have for all of us: (1) that online spaces can bring us together rather than rip us apart. (2) democracy itself is a kind of social technology that either updates or dies
Carl MillerThe digital democrats of Taiwan have managed to remove trolling from online political debate. All they needed to do was to flip the normal incentives and engineering of online platforms on their head.
Carl MillerI want to share my most optimistic and hopeful story of 2019:
How the digital democrats from Taiwan gained power, and showed the world that tech can be used to build entirely new forms of democracy.
The Commission's aim is to improve democracy in Newham; ensuring residents have opportunities to be more involved in local decision-making and shaping Newham's future.

So excited to say that I'm a member of the Democracy and Civic Participation Commission just launched by Newham Council today
It'll explore new ways for people to be involved in decisions across the Borough (incl the use of tech)
Fake news game confers psychological resistance against online misinformation
Carl MillerThis is extremely interesting. A game that puts people in the shoes of a illicit influence merchant online better protects people by showing them how it all works, than trying to 'inoculate' people to particular themes or stories.
Carl MillerThe two main lessons from our trip to Taiwan:
1. If you re-engineer online spaces, they can promote consensus rather than division.
2. Democracy itself can be seen as a social technology that needs to be updated as society changes around it
