A famous study on Mediterranean diet that appeared in nejm has been retracted and republished and led to awe/shock in academic circles
Falling through the Looking Glass. PrediMed researchers reanalyze their trial, retract and replace, as they reassess problems with randomization scheme. The fact that they, well, forgot the placebo for 3 years is now an afterthought..
Terrific piece by explaining what happened in the retracted Med diet study. Makes me even more suspect of the re-analyzed effect size. Mediterranean Diet Study Was Flawed. But Was It Wrong?
Does the Mediterranean diet prevent heart disease? A big study found it did. Now the investigators concede it was flawed.

#Mediterranean diet Looks like the individualized randomization morphed into unplanned & unreported household & village level clusters. Cluster randomization can be a superior "real world" study design BUT it needs to be part of the design upfront.

Who believes the "reanalysis" of the ludicrously flawed (at best) Mediterranean diet study? Sounds very like the fraudulent fruit and veg Indian trial
Problems with PREDIMED. The landmark NEJM study that found that the Mediterranean diet protects against heart disease was flawed. But after a retraction, and a brand new re-analysis, the authors say their conclusions still stand.
After uncovering #errors in a #famous #MediterraneanDiet study, the #original publication was retracted. New analysis, though, presented the same conclusions. via
Mediterranean Diet Study Was Flawed. But Was It Wrong?
Good case of RCT controversy. My favourite bit: " Participants [in vilkages] complained that some neighbors were receiving free olive oil, while they got only nuts or inexpensive gifts." So researcher gave them the oil to smooth tensions 😁
A important diet study was retracted -- but the investigators maintain the conclusion stands. Other experts aren't so sure.

The study touting the benefits of a Mediterranean diet was flawed. But there's enough data out there to suggest that its conclusions are still valid.
The PREDIMED study invalid? Is the evidence for the "Mediterranean Diet" now weaker?
So. the Med Diet study (often cited to support low #alcohol drinking for health) wasn't a randomized trial after all. Retracted.

That Huge Mediterranean Diet Study Was Flawed. But Was It Wrong? A flawed study is flawed even after the known flaws are corrected.
Mediterranean diet study is retracted and re-analyzed. But not everyone is convinced.

Turns out that the randomIzed trial that showed the benefits of the Mediterranean diet was not really randomIzed, so it was retracted... but the data was then reanalyzed and published with the same original conclusions...

This is a very interesting story. Would have published the study if the flaws in randomization had been acknowledged back in 2013? That Huge Mediterranean Diet Study Was Flawed. But Was It Wrong?

Bad week for high-profile studies. First, the (in)famous Stanford Prison Experiment: Second, the major RCT on the Mediterranean diet (I certainly wouldn't bet against Don Berry and Brad Efron):

That Huge Mediterranean Diet Study Was Flawed. But Was It Wrong? are you skeptical of the results???
Amazing science writing by This makes me trust the study more, not less. The two issues unearthed were real-world sensible (clustering by family) or inevitable (some misclassification) and neither should bias to effect. #CastTheFirstStone
