Setting the record straight on shadow banning
We do not shadow ban. And we certainly don’t shadow ban based on political viewpoints or ideology.
This is a bizarre and incredibly disingenuous statement from
. What's the point of following someone if Twitter blocks their tweets from appearing in your time-line? Maybe that's not technically "shadow-banning" but it's heavy-handed manipulation
We don't "shadow ban". Read more here 👇
What's the point of following someone if their tweets don't show up on your timeline? Maybe that's not necessarily "shadow-banning," but it's an inscrutably weird manipulation of the Twitter user experience
People are asking us if we shadow ban. We don't. Read more to get all the facts.
Following up on this with a lot more detail. We don’t shadow ban, and we certainly don’t shadow ban based on political viewpoints. We do rank tweets by default to make Twitter more immediately relevant (which can be flipped off). More on ranking signals
“We don’t shadowban under our extremely narrow definition, but we do all these other shadowbanning-like things” seems to be Twitter’s message. Very slippery.
Twitter statement: "We do not shadow ban...We do rank tweets and search results”

So I didn't previously believe that Twitter engaged in shadowbanning, but after reading their mealy-mouthed non-denial denial, now I kinda suspect they do?
I don't buy Twitter's explanations for shadow banning me and other conservatives.
Official Statement from Twitter: "We do not shadow ban."
"We do not shadow ban. You are always able to see the tweets from accounts you follow (although you may have to do more work to find them, like go directly to their profile)" Uhh Twitter, I'm pretty sure that's still shadowbanning
Twitter releases note denying that it shadowbans, then admitting that in effect it actually does. Somewhat disturbingly, note how a person can be deemed a ‘bad faith actor’ (and their tweet exposure reduced) because of who they follow, and who follows them
Oh hey. Look at that. I was. Twitter algorithms used the number of accounts who block someone as a factor of criteria for “bad faith actors.” (Shadowbanning)

That came from this
Setting the record straight on shadow banning (we don’t)
At day’s end, it’s great to read
’s blog regarding “shadow banning” & the accusation
made today regarding conservatives being subject to it:
It's actually an old internet term. Twitter claims they do not do it.
"Tweets from bad-faith actors who intend to manipulate or divide the conversation should be ranked lower." Are there any high profile people from the left who fall into this category? People calling Ivanka a feckless c-nt weren't caught up in the ban.
2 key things in this post: (1) a really clear explanation of how algorithms based on signals cause certain things to happen in the product that seem “targeted” but aren’t (2) a stark reminder of how complicated our systems are and how few understand them
a coda: very Illuminating blog post from twitter with lots of information to cap off the last 24 hours of wackiness. really important.
I'm sure this explanation will satisfy the far-right clown brigade
Setting the record straight on shadow banning. Sorry Donnie.
40. Here’s Twitter’s official statement on shadowbanning from July 2018. They say that they do not do it.
