SCOOP: Elon Musk opens up in an emotional hour-long interview. “This past year has been the most difficult and painful year of my career,” he tells us, going on to discuss his efforts to take Tesla private and the meaning of $420.
It’s okay for Elon Musk to be straining and even cracking a little under the extraordinary weight of his job. The question is why, if he knows that’s happening, he’s not leaning on and listening more to the people around him, and staying off Twitter.
“If you have anyone who can do a better job, please let me know. They can have the job.” — This remarkable, raw interview with ⁦⁩ is a must-read.

Just read the NYT interview with . It's good. Read it. Few thoughts (brief thread)...
Elon Musk breaks down in NYT interview. For some reason it is hard not to find this incredibly pathetic
Everyone has their favorite part of this NYT Elon Musk interview: “But I was not on weed, to be clear. Weed is not helpful for productivity. There’s a reason for the word ‘stoned.’ You just sit there like a stone on weed.”
I still admire his vision, but having carefully read this story, my big takeaway is that the world needs fewer narcissists running stuff, or maybe just more women.
Elon, even in this weird, self-inflicted crisis is really remarkable. Irredeemably, hopelessly incapable of not being frank; roiling with emotion; full of schemes. Love him, hate him, the dude is singular.
My takeaway from this story is that Elon Musk feels really, really sorry for himself.
Never read an interview like this with a CEO. Talking to the NYT, Elon Musk sounds like he's approaching a personal breakdown.
You might measure the health of a republic by how much of its news concerns the madness, vengeance, and sentimentality of lordlings and kings--see also the President, his family, various Supreme Court justices, Michael Bloomberg.
Blockbuster story. breaks his silence, struggles to control his emotions, and oooh boy.... By

Elon Musk opens up: "It is often a choice of no sleep or Ambien."
This NYT intv with Elon Musk is strange. Incredibly sympathetic to him: "vulnerable", "extraordinarily self-reflective", etc and no questions on disturbing issues from calling Thai cave rescuer 'pedo' to wisdom (or dangers) of his 24-hour work days
Elon Musk Details ‘Excruciating’ Personal Toll of Tesla Turmoil This article details the predictable results of sleep deprivation. Yes, even SV heroes need to sleep! More hours do not equal better results. #DyingForAPaycheck.

Hard to find many days during that year Tesla was not a major news story, via
Interesting interview with Musk. Very personal and revealing. (My fav Musk tweet btw is when he called that diver who saved 13 kids lives a pedophile. Classic!).
Interesting that admission of Ambien use here is being greeted by some on Twitter as shocking. It’s not an uncommon problem for techies (and don’t get me started on use and abuse of Ritalin). Also, recreational drug use in tech? Since always. Still rough.
What percentage of Elon Musk's troubles could have been avoided if he'd just decided a few years ago to shut the F up and concentrate on making good cars?
For sure this piece on Musk is the most disturbing interview I've ever seen or read with a big company CEO.

Something about this story did not seem right to me. I don't mean ethically, or that it was inaccurate. When I finished it, I felt I was missing something. What did I just read? I said to myself. Maybe you know what the trouble was.

Don’t tweet while driving to the airport. Interesting #ElonMusk interview on the miserable life of a billionaire working 120 hours a week to change the world #Tesla
This story on Elon’s personal sacrifices bums me out (& yes he’s made money & chosen this). But thanks for all you’ve done to advance energy innovation thus far
Brutal quote to give when your board is worried about your behaviour: “I thought the worst of it was over,” Musk said. “The worst is over from a Tesla operational standpoint... But from a personal pain standpoint, the worst is yet to come.”
i know there are more important things to puzzle over but WHY did he phrase it as "i was not on weed"? i am genuinely baffled -- was he currently stoned -- has he never been stoned -- was he thinking of the phrasing of other drugs eg on acid??
The problem with a CEO who works 120 hrs/wk - apart from the personal toll - is that it creates a workplace where everyone else is expected to work incessantly & pay the same price: Elon Musk Details ‘Excruciating’ Personal Toll of Tesla Turmoil

The NYT says SpaceX could possibly be used to bankroll Tesla’s privatization efforts
A must-read from beginning to end about Elon Musk.
Makes ya think: Maybe it wasn’t that Icarus flew too close to the sun (or was more of an ideas guy than an operations guy) but that he was blown off course by “smartish” short sellers? Cc ⁦⁩ ⁦⁦⁦⁦
Elon Musk, Amid Tesla Furor, Tells of ‘Most Difficult’ Year
2/ This just reported from NYT on SpaceX possibly bailing out + financing + owning Tesla (as Tesla bailed out Solar City).

This is something. I’m still processing. Genius. Tragic. Ambien. That’s all I’ve got while I process.
The fact that this interview happened says a lot about where the board is right now. Quite a read. $TSLA

It’s hard running even a small company and having a balanced personal life- there’s a very real trade off there. Good to be honest about it- I don’t think leadership is about wearing a mask.
