ALARMING: China breaks w/ precedent & withholds influenza samples from US. If trade war worsens, tariffs could also entangle vaccines, which should be global goods. Worrying clash of shortsighted Trump policies & China’s dangerous strong-arming
China's disinterest in sharing #H7N9 viruses predates this US administration, so clearly isn't about the current US-China trade war. But those tensions are unlikely to help.
"Given that this flu virus is a potential threat to humanity, not sharing it immediately with the global network of W.H.O. laboratories like C.D.C. is scandalous. Many could die needlessly if China denies international access to samples."
Nations routinely exchange samples of pathogens with the potential to become pandemics. But hundreds of people died of H7N9 flu in China, and samples from the mainland never arrived in the U.S.
“Pandemic influenza spreads faster than anything else. There’s nothing to hold it back or slow it down. Every minute counts.” But U.S.-China trade tensions may be holding up exchanges of deadly flu virus samples.

Very troubling development as this strain is the top pandemic threat -- “Jeopardizing U.S. access to foreign pathogens and therapies to counter them undermines our nation’s ability to protect against infections which can spread globally within days.”

I was Mexico’s Ambassador to China during the H1N1 outbreak. No country reacted in such a discriminatory way as China, even though we were completely transparent in sharing information. China didn’t with SARS, and now appears to do so again.
