NEW: Claims of sexism during Bernie Sanders's 2016 campaign have surfaced ahead of 2020 bid. "Was it too male? Yes. Was it too white? Yes,” his campaign manager told us. “Would this be a priority to remedy on any future campaign? Definitely." w/
Women who worked for the Bernie Sanders campaign in 2016 say complaints of sexism and mistreatment were not addressed. It could hinder a 2020 bid.
If I'm not wrong, some of these stories have been circulating for months or years, and in all cases, the women said they worried about coming forward for fear Clinton supporters would use this opportunistically to slam Bernie. I hope we can respect that.
“There was an entire wave of rotten sexual harassment that seemingly was never dealt with,” one former delegate wrote in a December email to a Sanders political strategist.
"Ms. Davis said that she was originally paid about $2,400 a month as a senior staff member and saw in the campaign’s records that a younger man who was originally supposed to report to her made $5,000 a month."
Jeff Weaver, Sanders' 2016 campaign manager, expressed some regret with how the 2016 operation was run. “Was it too male? Yes. Was it too white? Yes,” he said. “Would this be a priority to remedy on any future campaign? Definitely."
It's notable -- Bernie Sanders, before he has even jumped into the 2020 race, appears to be getting more scrutiny than he did in 2016
Background to these tweets is a New York Times piece published this afternoon: "For Bernie Sanders, Claims of Sexism in 2016 Campaign Hang Over 2020 Bid"
This Times piece signifigantly advances the Sanders campaign sexual harrassment story from earlier in the week, and underscores that all political campaigns need to have clear, robust harassment policies in place.
