Just had our reading group, where we discussed "Why science needs philosophy" (by and colleagues). It is a great topic to think about. We discussed how much education on philosophy we received (many none at all, some 1 course, often too early. >

Opinion: Why science needs philosophy Very happy to see our paper finally out in PNAS
Reading this opinion piece by and colleagues with my morning coffee - Why science needs philosophy. What a great idea to integrate philosophers in science departments and together build theoretical framework. Much needed advice for science today.
Opinion: Why science needs philosophy | PNAS — great piece on a timely and important topic. Thanks to ⁦⁩ ⁦⁩ and all the other contributors.
"Why science needs philosophy" I loved having a philosopher of science on my thesis committee and it was incredibly useful. I do wonder... should we also ask why philosophy needs science?
Why science needs philosophy. Recommended read!
Yes, this. Science needs philosophy. I find it so strange that you can earn a modern PhD (Doctorate of Philosophy, or Permanent head Damage, take your pick) without formal training in philosophy. We need to fill this gap.
"This independence created by philosophical insight is—in my opinion—the mark of distinction between a mere artisan or specialist and a real seeker after truth." — Albert Einstein Why science needs philosophy

100% this. So grateful for my philosopher collaborators.
Nine philosophers and scientists outline three examples in stem-cell, microbiome and cognitive science to show how philosophy can boost understanding and clarify scientific thought — and they offer a host of suggestions for how to make it happen.
Why do I adore this essay on bringing philosophy & life sciences closer together? Because long before I wrote about science, I studied philosophy & semiotics & I thought I was totally alone in my obsession with frameworks & meaning in microbiome science.
Why science needs philosophical thinking
Great to see in a leading science journal...may the conversations continue!
Perché la scienza ha bisogno della filosofia? Domani ne parliamo con Alberto Mantovani e Giovanni Boniolo. Partendo da un articolo che sta facendo il giro del mondo.
Brilliant opinion piece in : Why #science needs #philosophy. From #stemcell biology to #oncology & #CognitiveNeuroscience, philosophy has enhanced the vitality, rigour & productivity of science--and will likely continue to do so.

In my own view, there is no principled demarcation between science and philosophy.
Why science needs philosophy...thanks #discontinuity theory The reconnection between philosophy and science is both highly desirable

New in PNAS: Why science needs philosophy. SPOT ON. Philosophers like Dennett, Sinnott-Armstrong, & Craver have strongly influenced my thinking and inspired my research. I’d be lost otherwise.

Just gave my annual lecture on why the philosophy of science is a good foundation for learning about research methods & design. Here is a little gift for those who want to push their thinking a bit further. #PS1018

I could not agree more! Interesting article on science and philosophy: Opinion: Why science needs philosophy
This article on the needed conversation between science & philosophy is great -- even relevant in medicine -- see discussion on the microbiome for example.
I'm a couple days late with this...but just wanted to endorse this paper by and wholeheartedly

Science needs philosophy!
A very good piece. Spells out clearly and concretely with specific examples how philosophy can make practical contributions to scientific research, and gives actionable recommendations about how we can move toward more effective collaboration. Bravo

And check out philosophical contributions to contemporary science (as in, right now, while Dawkins is trying to dunk on dead people) discussed by noted living people Laplane, Mantovani, Adolphs, Chang, Mantovani, McFall-Ngai, Rovelli, Sober, & Pradeu.
This. WheneverI need a concrete example of why science needs philosophy, I point to 's brilliant work on "stemness" in stem cell research
"We hope the practical steps set out...will encourage a renaissance in the integration of science and philosophy. ...a close allegiance with philosophy will enhance the vitality of science. Modern science without philosophy will run up against a wall..."
I am a much better scientist for having done a philosophy degree in undergrad than I would have been otherwise.

Agreed! At the same time I cannot get rid of the feeling that philosophers are responsible here with their disdain towards interdisciplinarity and often too quick labelling of things as "non-philosophy" so "not-interesting".
