The New York Times
One prisoner was tied up and tortured for 2 days while no one noticed. Bloody inmates screamed for help from cells whose doors did not lock. Those were some of the gruesome details in a Justice Department report on the Alabama prison system.
NYT National News
One Alabama prisoner had been dead for so long that when he was discovered lying face down, his face was flattened. Another was tied up and tortured for 2 days while no one noticed.

"Sexual assaults occur in dormitories, cells, recreation areas, the infirmary, bathrooms, and showers at all hours of the day and night, the report said. Inmates are raped to pay off debts." One of the most horrific stories I've ever read
Justice Dept said Wed that it had “Reasonable cause to believe that Alabama routinely violates the constitutional rights of prisoners”
wrote a searing piece for
detailing how bad AL jails are:
To recap yesterday: DOJ finds "flagrant disregard" in Alabama for prisoners' right to be safe from rape and attack.
reports a separate investigation of staff-on-prisoner violence is still ongoing.
Some context to this appalling story: The US already has the highest incarceration rate of ANY country in the world, with about 700 people imprisoned per 100,000. If Alabama was a country, it would exceed even this. Nearly 1000. One in 100 people.
