Climate change is the big long-term threat, but the biggest culprit in the immediate crisis was the overuse of groundwater.
The monsoons lead to a combination of water sources supporting human habitats that includes glaciers, surface irrigation & ground water. But redundancy & surplus have gone missing from this once abundant system. Taking their place are galloping shortages.
