It’s not a stand-off. It’s a poorly thought out tax increase that stops senior consultants from being able to offer additional hours, and to take up senior management positions. #nhspensioncrisis
Immensely frustrating headline. It’s not that consultants are ‘working to rule’ but that insane pension rules mean they face bills of over £100k if they work too many hours. Simple fix for the govt. Ditch the insane rules.
I’m really sorry, but I find it hard to sympathise with NHS consultants complaining about a £75k tax bill on a £1.1m pension pot. And how many of those have another private pot?
It’s extraordinary to think that people who have dedicated their lives to caring for others are effectively being blamed for this, when the government has systematically underfunded our NHS for 9 years Please RT if you know who the real culprits are
Excellent Front Page on the NHS pension crisis "Doctors say the dispute is escalating so quickly that it will send NHS services “into meltdown” and is so serious that it poses “an existential threat” to the service’s survival."
There are certain problems in health policy which are hideously complex to solve. Ensuring that the NHS' most expensively trained professionals have an incentive to do NHS operations is not one of them.
Explaining this as “consultants work to rule in pension disagreement” seems a tad disingenuous. Try “consultants decline additional work, to avoid having to remortgage their homes”.

It is not a stand off ⁦⁩ There’s an imposed tax rule. Senior consultants are penalised for simply working normally. So they are backing off. NHS losing some of its most useful and dedicated expertise because of an ill-thought imposition.
