Ford and other companies say the industry overestimated the arrival of autonomous vehicles, which still struggle to anticipate what other drivers and pedestrians will do
Yup: "Tesla & its chief executive, Elon Musk, are nearly alone in predicting widespread use of self-driving cars within the next year. … it would take years and perhaps even a decade or more to develop driverless cars that could travel anywhere, any time"
Apparently, the skeptics were right, and the the optimistic "self-driving cars by 2022!" predictions were ... optimistic. Wish it had been the other way around.
Mimicking a driver with high accuracy was never an easy task. Will take at least 5 yrs to make sure all #ML training data edge cases driving the AV system are caught and to closely monitor system in the wild for all outputs.
The biggest hurdle for self-driving cars is the interaction with humans: self-driving cars always follow rules, but humans don't: "The technology is available now to create a car that won’t hit anything. But such a car would constantly slam on the brakes"
Self driving, autonomous vehicles are probably farther off than you think. And, that’s a good thing. via ⁦
Once again, the tech future meets the pesky real world. explains.
!!! Despite high hopes, self-driving cars are ‘way in the future’. Ford and other companies say the industry overestimated the arrival of autonomous vehicles, which still struggle to anticipate what other drivers and pedestrians will do
The future continues to be postponed because of technical difficulties
The easiest, but most boring answer to the question of "Why don't we have self-driving cars yet?" is that it was always going to take a while, and people just got a little over-optimistic.
Words that should be repeated often: "Offering a service is very different than building a technology.” Despite High Hopes, Self-Driving Cars Are ‘Way in the Future’
Count this plus genomics & aren’t the “transformation of everything” enthusiasts down 2-nil to the Luddites
See this for a cautionary tale and how has the bathroom scale score helped most outcomes for most people?
