Mosquitoes may have killed nearly half of humans who have ever lived & mosquito-borne disease is a growing problem, even today. Fascinating piece on humanity’s struggle against these tiny predators & the diseases they spread
"Crispr has been used to design mosquitoes that produce infertile offspring. If those mosquitoes were released into the wild, the species could become extinct." So, should we try now to make them extinct?
Four billion people are at risk from mosquito-borne diseases. We can get that number down to zero if we invest in new tools — like a set of techniques for genetically modifying mosquitoes — to complement the ones we already have.
Mosquitoes may have killed nearly half of the 108 billion humans who have ever lived across humanity’s existence.

The invocation of gene drives here is a little misleading. You'd have to wipe out maybe 4 anopheles species and aedes aegypti/albopictus to wipe out malaria/Zika/dengue/yellow fever. There are hundreds of other mosquito species that could remain.

'The Mosquito' by Timothy C. Winegard is a wonderful history of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne illness. It is even light enough reading that you can take it to the beach. I did. #mosquito #malaria #dengue #yellowfever
