“A new report forecasts that coal, oil and gas will still contribute about 85 per cent of primary energy supply by 2040, compared with 90 per cent today.”
This is why we are still on a worst-case emissions path, which leads to a 4C+ outcome. Renewables are being installed at an unprecedented rate, but they still add up to only 2% of global primary energy, and fossil fuels are being increased even faster.

Renewable energy push barely dents fossil fuel dependence
Despite growing political momentum to prevent climate change, a new report from
underscores the world’s enduring dependence on hydrocarbons and the challenge to scale up greener technologies to meet energy demand
Despite spectacular news stories about renewables, coal, oil and gas will still contribute about 85 % of primary energy supply by 2040, compared with 90 % today.
Extrapolating recent trends, new report finds that world will burn MORE fossil fuel in 2040 than today: we'll use at least 25% more energy while the fossil-fuel share will drop only marginally: from 90% to 85%. We must REDUCE emissions, by 45% by 2030!
What the fuck are we doing?
