I went to Mr. Epstein’s Manhattan mansion to talk about Tesla. We ended up discussing much more — including his belief that sex with teenage girls should be acceptable.
1. Last year, @JamesStewartNYT sat down with Jeffrey Epstein. The terms of the interview were that Epstein's remarks were to be on background, which meant that James couldn't attach his name. Now that Epstein is dead, that agreement is no longer binding
Exclusive: @JamesStewartNYT visited Jeffrey Epstein at his home last year.
He said he didn't think having sex with teenagers should be criminalized.
And, Epstein said, he had dirt on powerful people.
NYT columnist James Stewart interviewed Jeffrey Epstein last year. Stewart says after, Epstein invited him to dine with him and Woody Allen. He couldn't. After that, he asked Stewart to join him for dinner with Michael Wolff and Steve Bannon. He declined.
Hard to read this without thinking of David Carr’s piece on how many male journalists—himself included—knew of but revealed nothing about Bill Cosby’s crimes.
The @nytimes ran quotes from a 2018 interview w/ Jeffrey Epstein that was "on background," not for attribution. The reporter argues the deal ended with Epstein's death. nytimes.com/2019/08/12/bus…
Is your understanding of "on background" that the secrecy ends when the source dies?
James Stewart intervu last summer at Epstein mansion: he “knew an astonishing number of rich, famous and powerful people, and had photos to prove it. He also claimed to know...details about their supposed sexual proclivities and recreational drug use.”
"Mr. Epstein told me without any trace of irony, he was considering becoming a minister so that his acquaintances would be confident that their conversations would be kept confidential."
MBS and the Saudis are wrapped up in this too? Conspiracy theories are almost always wrong but the "he slipped while shaving" explanation of Epstein death gets harder and harder to believe
There's a religion angle in every story:
"Epstein told me without any trace of irony, [that] he was considering becoming a minister so that his acquaintances would be confident that their conversations would be kept confidential."
Is it true that your agreement to keep someone on background ends with their death? Forgetting that this was Epstein we’re dealing with, this feels really journalistically shadowy to me. I don’t think I would ever do this even if it’s allowed

Musk & Tesla flatly denied it. But questions remained.
