As with immigration (), Trump has driven support for free trade to new highs . The idea that he has some magical power over public opinion on these issues is just wrong.

I’m most struck by the dramatic decline in ⁦⁩‘s favorable ratings, from 54%-22% positive to 34%-38% negative(all adults). Opponents’ attacks & media scrutiny have had a big impact. Same for Bernie. Warren’s just so-so. Trump is low as usual.
According to the latest national poll from NBC News/WSJ, 64% of Americans — including majorities of Dems and Republicans — agree with the statement that free trade is good for America. That‘s a 7-point increase from the last time it was asked in 2017. 🙌🏼
Quite a collapse for someone resting on "electability": "Joe Biden has seen his popularity among all adults come down to earth — from 54 percent positive and 22 percent negative in January 2018 (+32), to 34 percent positive, 38 percent negative now (-4)"
🚨"Amid President Donald Trump’s trade war with China, nearly two-thirds of Americans say they support free trade with foreign countries...an all-time high...and...a 7-point increase from the last time it was asked in 2017."🚨
Three leading Dem candidates are underwater in popularity, this poll shows. It continues a trend that began in 2014, where many underwater candidates won. If voters all politicians are bad, that data set becomes less predictive.
Now would be a great time for Democrats to embrace free trade and give up on this Bernie-Warren protectionist nonsense.

NEW: Support for free trade reaches new high in NBC/WSJ poll
The fact that free trade support is quickly rising at the same time as a broad move left in policy mood across most issue areas helps show that this is a thermostatic public move against Trump & policy, rather than a generational ideological change
What if Trump’s most lasting conservative legacy is teaching the public strange new respect for free trade
Support for free trade was at an all-time high in the latest NBC/WSJ poll.
“Just 27 percent believe free trade is bad, because it hurts manufacturing and other key industries, and there’s no proof that more trade creates better jobs.”
