The modern GOP is the enemy of democracy: An analysis from the guys who literally wrote the book on how democracies die
“Until Republicans learn to compete fairly in a diverse society, our democratic institutions will be imperiled.”
Oped by Levitsky and me: Why Republicans Play Dirty
Levitsky/⁦⁩: “American democracy faces a Catch-22: Republicans won’t abandon their white identity bunker strategy until they lose, but at the same time that strategy has made them so averse to losing they are willing to bend the rules.”
Just read this right now!
Good piece. I would add that in the American context, parties play dirty when they confront what they see as an existential threat to the racial/ethnic order. 1850s, post-Reconstruction, 1920s (immigration and redistricting), and now.
Republicans play more constitutional hardball because they fear existential threats & not being able to compete electorally in the future (& I would add, they know the typical direction of policymaking is liberal)
This and this alone is sufficient to go #NeverTrump. "Constitutional hardball can damage and even destroy a democracy. Democratic institutions only function when power is exercised with restraint." Democracy > ANYONE'S political agenda.
Good essay here on the condundrum American democracy finds itself in right now, from & Steven Levitsky. Key grafs below -->
You should read this OpEd. Two comments: 1) I'm not totally convinced we understand the cause of Republican constitutional hardball. It might an existential fear, but it might be a belief in the absolute righteousness of the cause (e.g., abortion) 1/2
"How Democracies Die" authors Levitsky/Ziblatt correctly contextualize Trump within the GOP's long evolution into an authoritarian party
This is exactly what Ziblatt and Levinsky are saying today.
“Democratic institutions only function when power is exercised with restraint. When parties abandon the spirit of the law and seek to win “by any means necessary,” politics often descends into institutional warfare.”
Our democracy is at risk because the GOP knows they will lose future elections -- unless they cheat and subvert our institutions >Big question: will Trump willingly step down after losing in Nov 2020? If not, will GOP stand with democracy or a dictator?
“#Republicans across the country seem to have embraced an “any means necessary” strategy to preserve their power.” #Machiavelli

Why Republicans Play Dirty
Republicans are abandoning democracy, because they are becoming rapidly uncompetitive in a more diverse country.
