Sad news. As a young scholar, Ignatiev’s book, “How the Irish Became White” was pivotal to my burgeoning understanding of whiteness as a construct and not something fixed, and how the whitening process always relied on an acceptance of anti-blackness.
Noel Ignatiev, historian of whiteness and fearless critic of racial categories and power, has passed away. He was, for sure, my most memorable grad school classmate: a steelworker and radical turned academic, argumentative, well-read, cranky, & very smart.
