President Trump will sign an executive order defining Judaism as a nationality, not just a religion, thus bolstering the Education Department's efforts to stamp out "Boycott Israel" movements on college campuses
Trump to sign executive order effectively interpreting Judaism as a nationality, not just a religion and empowering the Education Department to withhold money from institutions that tolerate anti-Israel movements
Trump to sign executive order targeting anti-Semitism on college campuses.
Here's an actual threat to free speech on college campuses, decreed by a president openly contemptuous of the Constitution (and of Jews), and targeted at political speech against Israel. Let's see how many "free speech"-obsessed elite pundits condemn it.
1. The insincerity of “campus free speech” criticisms is really laid bare here, whatever side of the issue you’re on. 2. The first person to sue over this on first amendment grounds will almost certainly be Jewish. 3. Judaism is not a “nationality.”
We live in an age where Jews who support BDS are anti-Semites and white nationalists who back Israel are not
This is terrible. When will the dense political right understand that actions like these reinforce the woke left’s speech policing regime
Great to see this. Now we need to target Anti-Semitism in Congress! Trump to Sign Order Targeting Anti-Semitism on College Campuses - The New York Times
This is not “protecting Judaism under civil rights law.” This is using Jews and Judaism as a shield to go after Palestinians and anti-authoritarian professors and student activists. We’re #NotYourShield, .
Anyone paying attention should have seen this coming a mile away.
WHAT THE F--K!!! THIS SCARES THE DAYLIGHTS OUT OF ME!!! My religion is Judaism, but I am an American. Does this mean I will need to have a yellow star on my license? This does not stop anti Semitism, this makes Jewish people easier to identify.
Democrats are going to hate this. Trump to Sign Order Targeting Anti-Semitism on College Campuses
. + are world-class journalists but the needs to change this headline. Trump isn't targeting anti-Semitism. He's using a bogus definition of anti-Semitism to target critics of Israel
The order’s move to define Judaism as a "nationality" promotes the classically bigoted idea that American Jews are not American. Trump’s Executive Order is not about keeping Jews safe. This is just more antisemitism.
The redefinition of antisemitism into "anti-Likud" continues at a frenetic pace, transforming every Jew outside Israel into a pawn for colonialism and severely jeopardizing free speech on campus:
Still waiting on the Birthright Citizenship Executive Order...
By far the worst Trump-era attack on free speech is this executive order from Trump designed to punish campus criticism of Israel. Israel critics are already the #1 target of campus censorship. Will the Right's fake free speech crusaders denounce this?
So according to Trump, "denying the Jewish people self-determination" is now bigotry, which loses a college government funds. Denying Palestinians the right to self-determination, by contrast, is US + Israeli policy
Less than 72 hrs after calling Jews killers, accusing Jews of not loving Israel enough, and repeating dangerous anti-Semitic stereotypes, Trump does this. Coincidence? NO. Attempt to gloss over his anti-Semitism & direct role in our rising insecurity? YES.
This violates the students First Amendment though... what if the next dem president banned right wing groups?
Trump basically trying to outlaw criticizing Israel on college campuses
This seems dubiously legal but it is undoubtedly bonkers on a substantive level. Judaism is both an ethnicity and religion, but it is *not* a single national origin
What was that about Republicans being the party of free speech?
We ⁦⁩ welcome Exec Order which will implement what bipartisan legislation has sought for years; enabling ⁦⁩ to hold colleges accountable for #antisemitism on campus
Thank you for signing this important executive order to fight #AntiSemitism on college campuses. 🇮🇱🇺🇸
'We at the NYT really REALLY hate the IHRA definition of antisemitism. We hate it. Really. Very much.'
Trump issues an order implementing a longtime goal of antisemites to treat Judaism as a race or nationality, not just a religion.
Thank God we have the First Amendment, which I've been confidently told by many of the people freaking out about this is just a regressive shield for bigots that no right-thinking person would defend on principle
Days after Trump makes blatantly antisemitic remarks to a roomful of Jews, he will sign EO that does nothing to protect Jews, while threatening 1st amendment. Yes, Israel is the Jewish homeland. But the State of Israel is a country & can be criticized.
This could be a game-changer on college campuses like the University of North Carolina, where last year a performer at a conference that received DoE funds sang to the audience, "This is my antisemitic song...think of Mel Gibson. Go that antisemitic."
So I have no doubt that this Trump administration classification of Judaism as a "nationality" is being done for untoward reasons. But let me give a little context from my people, the Cajuns of south Louisiana.
So, it is obviously, broadly fucked up that Trump is attempting to stiffle criticism of Israel on campus, and I sincerely hope this faces a legal challenge. However, I also have a micro-complaint.
BDS groups have tried shutting down my events. Enjoy the censorship y’all wanted for others!
Trump to Sign Order Targeting Anti-Semitism on College Campuses -major!!!!
The president’s action will protect Judaism under civil rights law and empower the Education Department to withhold money from institutions that tolerate anti-Israel movements.
We live in the upside down. Also, this will only strengthen BDS.
Anti-Semitism is deplorable and it is right to act against it. But it is deeply wrong to equate criticism of Israel or resistance to policies pursued by one of its governments with anti-Semitism. via
With Anti-semitism on the rise across the world and particularly pernicious on College Campuses, this will be a welcome development.
The ⁦⁩ is good at journalism but bad at headlines.
Free Speech on Campus
Trump to Sign Order Targeting Anti-Semitism on College Campuses // Why does Title VI not include religion when the rest of the Act does? I'm uninformed/confused.
Unconstitutional. US government shouldn't have any power to define or to police "bias", on campus or anywhere else.
It's an interesting time to be alive, and watch our democracy incrementally dissolving. What we're witnessing is just the warm-up. We've not yet got to the main event....
Dear & might there be a not-so-small problem with labeling Judaism a race or nationality? The historical precedents for this are frightening, but this doesn't appear in your story.
"Even the most casual study of the record, Landsman thinks, would show that strange times to be a Jew have almost always been, as well, strange times to be a chicken." —Michael Chabon
