Useful primer on the benefits of masks. A recommendation from CDC for consumers to wear cotton masks (with guidelines on how to fashion these products from household items) can improve safety and reduce spread and not strain the hospital supply chain.
#COVID19 This is probably the best scientific explainer I have seen on why we should all wear masks against #coronavirus “We cannot any longer claim that masks “are not effective”. We cannot allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good.” #Masks4All
A biologist's explainer of how coronavirus spreads, and why wearing any sort of mask - even a cloth mask or scarf - could help stop it.
"The latest biological findings on SARS-Cov-2 viral entry into human tissue and cough-droplet ballistics suggest that the major transmission mechanism are not fine aerosols but large droplets, and thus, warrant the wearing of surgical masks by everyone."
Sui Huang, , colleague, on Why we Should all Wear Masks: But I think it also means that sick people should not wear masks so they don't rebreathe their viral particles. This is opposite what is recommended now.
Here is another great argument for everyone doing their part by wearing a face covering to help flatten the #COVID19 curve.
An excellent article. Imagine the positive impact this would have had if it had published over a month ago.
"We cannot allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good." Wear masks. Wash your hands.
"The official recommendation in the United States (and other Western countries) that the public should not wear face masks was motivated by the need to save respirator masks for health care workers." #Masks4All #maskeauf

"Given that the upper respiratory tract is the major site for SARS-Cov-2 entry... wearing simple face masks which exert a barrier function that … may substantially reduce the production rate R, to an extent that may be comparable to social distancing.”
The latest findings on #COVID19 viral entry into tissue and sneeze/cough-droplet ballistics suggest that the major transmission mechanism is not via the fine aerosols but large droplets, and thus, warrant the wearing of barrier masks by everyone.
Masks need to be worn by ALL. Home made masks better than nothing. Everyone needs a mask in public NOW “We cannot any longer claim that masks “are not effective”. We cannot allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good.” #MasksNow #CoronaUpdate
Another topical article in Medium COVID-19: a discussion on why we should all wear masks. Will be interested in cleverer people than me & their thoughts on this. ⁦⁩ ⁦⁩ ⁦⁩ ⁦⁦
Tous les professionnels avec des masques professionnels Tous les autres avec des masques chirurgicaux ou home made Il n’y a que comme ça et avec les autres mesures de distanciation que l’activité pourra reprendre en juin !!!! MASQUE OBLIGATOIRE !
Social distancing, hand hygiene, lockdown but also wearing masks are key features to flatten the curve of #COVID19 epidemic
Looks like 20 feet and universal masks - vs. six feet and no masks. Color me shocked that the guidelines were junk.
COVID-19: WHY WE SHOULD ALL WEAR MASKS — THERE IS NEW SCIENTIFIC RATIONALE
Here's a detailed & easy to read article by Sui Huang about why we need #Masks4All! By wearing a mask you protect others and you protect yourself as well! It's #DYIMask time for everyone!
Why We Should All Wear Masks — Science Rational #covid19
Good article on masks. 'It would be tragic if the wrong logics and mechanics and biology, which has led Western governments to not encourage, if not stigmatize the wearing of masks, may have contributed to the steep rise of #COVID19.' #WearTheMask
Clear, compelling rationale for mask use during the COVID pandemic: ✅Evidence that most infections begin with inhaled LARGE droplets from cough/sneeze ✅Even simple masks block most such droplets ✅Droplets can spray 20 feet, so 6’ NOT safe distance!
COVID-19: WHY WE SHOULD ALL WEAR MASKS — THERE IS NEW SCIENTIFIC RATIONALE
The evidence is all over the place #masks4all is needed with #Covid19
Here’s an interesting article on the use of masks... it’s food for thought
Scientist Sui Huang, MD, PhD found cough/sneeze droplets can reach 6m (19.7 ft). #COVID19 #WearAMask #MedTwitter
More and more people are making a case for wearing masks, especially when we want to ease up on physical distancing because we cannot live like this forever or even for months.
Inderdaad, niemand kent relatie tussen maskerdracht en besmettingskans. In mijn aanbeveling over mondmaskers verwees ik naar Fig5 uit die weergeeft welk % deeltjes lekt (op basis van data uit deze studie )
Finally universal mask policy at UCSD. All patients and employees should be protected. ⁦⁩ ⁦⁩ ⁦
Effectiveness of different types of masks in protecting you from others (inward protection):and others from you (outward protection)
And here we have the scientific rationale for wearing masks (not the N95 ones that should go to healthcare workers, but any masks, even homemade!)
A clear statement showing why wearing surgical masks should be considered for ALL (health professionals, patients and all citizens). High cost-efficacy even it's not in our cultural habits in Europe. #Masks4All #COVID19
Many of these papers are summarized in this great work from Professor Sui Huang, MD
"There is now a robust scientific basis for putting an end to the officials’ anti-surgical mask hysteria and to recommend or even mandate a broad use of masks as in Asian countries that have bent the curve." #COVID19
MD friend sent me this article but the science is going to take me a while to grasp so I can’t vouch for it
They also block aerosols, though much less effectively except for N95/FFP2 respirators, but again even a bit of protection could matter a great deal at the population-level and there is evidence droplets play a larger role in transmission of COVID-19.
" the official message that surgical masks are “not effective” may have sent the wrong message ... discussion about the effectiveness of masks has been stifled, and with it ... incentivizing industry to ramp up production "
COVID-19: WHY WE SHOULD ALL WEAR MASKS  — THERE IS NEW SCIENTIFIC RATIONALE , #COVID19
Not wearing masks to protect against coronavirus is a ‘big mistake,’ top Chinese scientist says Austria requires masks now Many useful blog posts w refs now, e.g.
You might also like to read something in support of the very simple hypothesis that if everyone wore masks in crowded public places, transmission would be lower. Much lower.
Another piece that stresses the importance of masks. #COVID19
First, why is this important? There's plenty of evidence that #COVID19 is spread through airborne droplets and aerosols (droplets = larger particles that fall to the ground somewhat quickly, aerosols = particles that hang in the air). Read this 👇
