Everything the Trump administration has promised—drive-thru testing centers in Walmart parking lots, a website to diagnose people, and now the hospital ship sent to NY—has turned out to be useless or nonexistent nytimes.com/2020/04/02/nyr…pic.twitter.com/4P5cUG8hnp
This is wild. The Navy isn’t accepting people with Covid19 onto the ship, and “is also refusing to treat a host of other conditions. Guidelines disseminated to hospitals included a list of 49 medical conditions that would exclude a patient from admittance”
Besides excluding COVID-19 patients, the Comfort bars patients with nearly 50 other conditions. It has only 3 patients on board. ‘It’s a joke,’ says the head of NY’s largest hospital system.
A tangle of military protocols and bureaucratic hurdles has left the U.S.N.S. Comfort with just *THREE* patients.
It has 1,000 beds and 1,200 crew members.
“It’s a joke."
Joseph Heller would be proud. There are only 20 patients on the 1200 bed hospital ship Comfort in New York City because of strict Navy requirements for keeping the ship free of sick people and those with medical conditions. nytimes.com/2020/04/02/nyr…pic.twitter.com/vXCPFMnru0
Would it be too much to ask that the Federal government figure out how to do one single thing related to the virus correctly--just, literally, ANYTHING--before being publicly called out for screwing it up?
Donald Trump made a show of sending off the USNS Comfort. But because of a tangle of bureaucracy, it's sitting mostly idle. States need real resources to fight this pandemic, not elaborate displays that feed Trump's ego.
The 1,000-Bed Comfort Was Supposed to Aid New York. It Has 3 Patients.
Ambulances cannot take patients directly there, patients must get evaluated at to a city hospital, tested for coronavirus, then pick them up again for transport to the ship.
So the Comfort, sent with such hoopla to NYC a few days ago, is taking care of all of three patients. But not to worry! Navy brass is on the job! They've relieved the captain who told the truth about COVID-19 aboard the Theodore Roosevelt of command.
Were these ships to NY and CA a PR stunt? Why are there only 3 patients while NY hospitals are overflowing with patients? What is the point of a 1000 bed hospital if there is so much bureaucracy involved to get patients on it?
ny
Patients are dying in New York City hospital hallways before they can be hooked up to one of the few available ventilators. Meanwhile, this bullshit ship Donald Trump keeps bragging about is treating THREE patients.
With great fanfare, Trump traveled to Norfolk, Va., to personally see off the ship, saying it would play a “critical role.”
There are only 20 patients on board. A top NY hospital official says, “It’s a joke”
Comfort Hospital Ship Was Supposed to Aid New York. It Has 3 Patients. @nytimes We don’t learn! Puerto Rico, now NY+Los Angeles! Why we over complicate things? ! In Bahamas @WCKitchen we did 45+medical evacuations! By helicopter! We r 👨🍳!
The 1,000-bed Comfort was supposed to aid New York. Trump left a sequester in the White House to personally see off the ship. It only has 20 patients.
"It's a joke," said a top hospital executive, whose facilities are packed with coronavirus patients.
⁉️WHAT⁉️
@USNavy hospital ship Comfort, docked in #NYC, has 1,000 beds but only 3 patients have been transferred, even though NYC hospitals are overwhelmed with #COVID19 patients.
USNS Mercy is docked in LA, but has only 15 patients.
#coronavirus
After Trump hyped the USNS Comfort as playing a “critical role” and mass media trumpeted its arrival to NYC, the 1,000 bed ship has accepted just 20 patients and is under orders to not treat COVID patients. A top New York doctor called it “a joke”.
Only three patients have been transferred to Comfort hospital ship, its 1,000 beds largely unused, its 1,200-member crew mostly idle, even as NY hospitals struggle to find space for the thousands infected with coronavirus, per NYT.
They promised us relief, a 1,000-bed fully staffed medical ship to help NYC battle #COVID19 .
But they lied.
Only 20 people have been deemed worthy of care aboard the USS Comfort.
Thanks for nothing, @USNavy and @WhiteHouse .
NOTHING.
“A tangle of military protocols and bureaucratic hurdles has prevented the Comfort from accepting many patients.”
The 1,000 bed hospital has 3 patients.
"A tangle of military protocols and bureaucratic hurdles has prevented the USNS Comfort from accepting many patients at all." Three so far, to be exact.
The USNS Comfort sailed into New York to help the city's slammed hospitals cope. So far, it's taken only 20 patients.
Interesting observation that sheltering in place is driving down car crashes & gun shot wounds.
It has 1,000 beds and only 20 patients — the navy ship meant to relieve NY hospitals amid #covid19 pandemic won’t accept #covid19 patients or patients with 49 other other medical conditions
On Thursday, the U.S.N.S. Comfort, which officials had promised would bring succor to a city on the brink, sat mostly empty, infuriating local hospital executives. The ship’s 1,000 beds are largely unused, its 1,200-member crew mostly idle.
As predicted - these cities don't need someone to take the minor non-COVID patients. They need decompression of COVID PATIENTS!!! The 1,000-Bed Comfort Was Supposed to Aid New York. It Has 20 Patients.
At the moment, this appears to have been all photo-op without any real meaning. Hopefully this will change quickly. USNS Comfort Hospital Ship Was Supposed to Aid New York. It Has 3 Patients. - The New York Times
Jesus. The military hospital ship docked in New York is barely taking patients. It has 1,000 beds and NYC hospitals are overflowing — but the ship has accepted a measly 20 patients.
Can the federal government get anything right?

‘The inclusion criteria area too strict, and the population being treated does not represent the real population.’
Feels like a snapshot from a clinical trial discussion section.
“On top of its strict rules preventing people infected with the virus from coming on board, the Navy is also refusing to treat a host of other conditions. Guidelines disseminated to hospitals included a list of 49 [excluded] medical conditions”
Oh, dear.
USNS Comfort in my view embodies the disappointing American response to Covid: social or legal issues hamper deployment of the best medical infrastructure in the world.
Hopefully it can also embody the American tendency to improve superbly after a crisis.

The 1,000-Bed Comfort Was Supposed to Aid New York. It Has 20 Patients.
USS Comfort sent to NYC with great fanfare has 20 patients (but space for 1000). Meanwhile NYC hospitals are overrun, drs & nurses don’t have enough protective gear & are getting sick, patients are dying in hallways & are running low on body bags
Remember the glorious water parade of @USNavy Comfort down the Hudson to help save New York?
It was BS.
3 patients.
"On top of its strict rules preventing people infected with the virus, the Navy is also refusing to treat a host of other conditions."
Not a great day for @USNavy. “It’s pretty ridiculous,” he said. “If you’re not going to help us with the people we need help with, what’s the purpose?”
I’m so fucking disappointed!! If you’re not going to let any of the thousands of COVID-19 patients aboard, what the fuck is the point of being here? Whoever thought this idea would be helpful was the biggest dumbass in class. F- ☹️
We all know the reason... The hospitals make more $$ per patient on normal patients than Covid patients, so they would rather dump Covid patients on the military....
