A policeman at your doorstep, strangers in space suits asking for your blood: Unusual times call for unusual methods. How Germany is methodically testing its way out of the lockdown, one random sample at the time. My report
Other nations, including the United States, are still struggling to test for infections. But Germany is doing that and more. It is aiming to sample the entire population for antibodies in coming months.
“The government hopes to use the findings to unravel a riddle that will allow Germany to move securely into the next phase of the pandemic: Which of the far-reaching social and economic restrictions that have slowed the virus are most effective...”
Michael Hoelscher got the idea for the antibody study in the shower. It was the day before the lockdown was imposed. He wrote a pitch to the government. Six hours later, he got the green light. How Germany is methodically planning its exit strategy
Germany has become a leader among Western nations in figuring out how to control the coronavirus contagion while returning to something resembling normal life
The #COVD19 antibody test has serious accuracy issues; there's a "medical free-for-all" Germany taking the lead with it , Munich studies
This seems so obvious to me. Massive, broad, even random testing is the key to getting back to normal. That way you really know where the virus is and how it is spreading. If Germany can do it, why can't others?
Germany & #coronavirus: efficiency, clear thinking, honesty & transparency One antibody study: A scientist had the idea and the next day: "wrote a short pitch to the Bavarian government. Six hours later, he had the green light"
Single Most Hopeful & Maddening Story this morning. Germany Bringing virus to heel with cutting edge science and public health. USA has Science and Expertise in Abundance but ... Where is National Leadership & Will? Excellent story
With Broad, Random Tests for Antibodies, Germany Seeks Path Out of Lockdown. It was the first Western democracy to contain #coronavirus, and now it is going to re-open the economy. The world is watching, by via #COVID19 #globalhealth
This is what good government with a effective leader looks like. Alas
With Broad, Random Tests for Antibodies, Germany Seeks Path Out of Lockdown Major companies will incentivize all of their employees to all participate in these tests. These data will lead to changing workplace arrangements to maintain productivity.
"The mortality rate in the town...turned out to be 0.37%, much lower than the national rate of 3% which is calculated based only on detected infections."
Thankful to be living in a country where science is guiding the politicians, not vice versa
With Broad, Random Tests for Antibodies, Germany Seeks Path Out of Lockdown
With Broad, Random Tests for Antibodies, Germany Seeks Path Out of Lockdown It was the first large democracy to contain the spread of the coronavirus and is now the first to methodically go about reopening its economy. Others are watching.
Germany aims to sample the entire population for antibodies, hoping to gain insight into how deeply the #coronavirus has penetrated society, how deadly it really is, and whether immunity might be developing. #COVID19
Here is a model of wide-spread repeat testing. Hopefully we will be able to do this sometime soon in many states across the US.
Instead of doing this, we're scrambling to test folks, hospitals are overwhelmed, & some governors are fighting against stay-at-home orders or re-opening beaches, while the federal government flounders because the President is busy fomenting insurrection.
"broad confidence in government has given Germany a tremendous advantage. It is much of the reason a knock on the door by a police officer and strangers dressed like aliens asking for blood can engender good will rather than alarm."
Long article on Germany plan for national sero-survey. never quite says how info will be used.
If Germany is “the first large Western democracy to contain the spread of the coronavirus” is Australia not large, not Western, not a democracy, or not a place that “contained” it before Germany? What the Germans are doing is great, but Oz is doing better
Fast Science --- "Mr. Hoelscher got the idea for the antibody study in the shower....The next day, he said he wrote a short pitch to the Bavarian government. Six hours later, he had the green light."
How science-based leadership works: “In the free world, Germany is the first country looking into the future,” "a knock on the door by a police officer and strangers dressed like aliens asking for blood can engender good will rather than alarm”
Must say I’ve never been so curious to see what comes out of this survey - and I’ve done a few! This is not even mine!
