The CDC, the global gold standard for public health statistics for decades, is also mixing antibody and viral tests in its new COVID Data Tracker. It's one of those things that is unbelievable. And yet, here we are.
.'s COVID19 test reporting now adds antibody and viral tests together, making it a useless indicator of testing and infection rates. The politicization of public health data is alarming. The virus only spreads faster when governments cook the books
There has been a lot of justified attention for this story by and . It reports that the CDC has been conflating two different sorts of test results when reporting testing numbers for different states. This is why that is bad 1/n
CDC and several states mash together diagnostic test results with serological test results - this makes testing numbers look better in America, as Trump et. al. want and as Trump says. This is false and misleading “data.”
Ugh. I hope other states aren’t combining PCR and serology like CDC, GA, PA and TX
“The CDC is making, at best, a debilitating mistake... The agency confirmed to The Atlantic on Wednesday that it is mixing the results of viral and antibody tests, even though the two tests reveal different information and are used for different reasons.”
Handcuffed, muzzled, blatantly erroneous. How could , the model agency to protect the public & one I'd so highly regarded, leave the US defenseless and be gagged?
"Mixing the two tests makes it much harder to understand the meaning of positive tests, and it clouds important information about the U.S. response to the pandemic." CDC conflating viral and antibody test results, and report.
How is this possible? I cannot believe that career scientists at like #AnneSuchat would make a mistake like this. I smell a rat. In fact, it seems more plausible that there is some political interference here.
NEW, from me and : The CDC is conflating viral and antibody test results in its COVID-19 data, presenting an inaccurate picture of the pandemic and corrupting a key metric. Pennsylvania, Georgia, Texas, and other states are doing the same.
The CDC and States Are Misreporting COVID-19 Test Data - The Atlantic
The Atlantic: The CDC is "conflating the results of two different types of coronavirus tests, distorting several important metrics and providing the country with an inaccurate picture of the state of the pandemic."
States shouldn't be mixing PCR/viral tests (tests of whether someone *currently* had the virus) with antibody tests (tests of whether they *previously* had it) in their data. That just makes it a lot harder to tell what's going on. Don't do this, states.
"How could the CDC make that mistake? This is a mess." reports that the CDC is conflating viral and antibody tests, compromising a few crucial metrics that governors depend on to reopen their economies.
The CDC is conflating viral and antibody test results, corrupting a key metric that governors consult before reopening, and report. Pennsylvania and other states are doing the same. “This is a mess,” one expert says.
This is... so bad. The CDC and States Are Misreporting COVID-19 Test Data - The Atlantic
‼️ is mixing results from viral and antibody #coronavirus tests—that provide VERY DIFFERENT info—distorting key metrics, providing an inaccurate status of the #CoronavirusPandemic, and overstating the US’ ability to test for #COVID19.🤬
The CDC is conflating viral and antibody test results, corrupting a key metric that governors consult before reopening, and report. Pennsylvania and other states are doing the same. “This is a mess,” one expert says.
Important investigative work from my colleagues and on artificially high testing numbers. Combining viral and antibody tests into one metric is meaningless and dangerously misleading.
"‘How Could the CDC Make That Mistake?’"
Our daily update is published. We’ve now tracked 13.1 million tests, up ~406k from yesterday. Note that we can only track tests that a state reports, and that there are important caveats. For details, see:
One test (PCR) diagnoses acute infection: are you sick now? The other (antibody) detects past infection: have you ever been sick? If the CDC and some states combine them, we have no idea if the epidemic is growing now or we're looking at the past.
Whyyyyyy is the CDC combining the results of viral tests with antibody tests? This is such a mess. It gives a completely higgeldy piggeldy picture of America's epidemic.
““You’ve got to be kidding me,” said ⁦⁩. “How could the CDC make that mistake? This is a mess.”
So America's improvement in Covid-19 testing has been, to some extent, a mirage
What the. The CDC "confirmed to The Atlantic on Wednesday that it is mixing the results of viral and antibody tests."
Libertarian as I am, government failures and incompetence still sometimes shock me. This is one of those circumstances.
‘How Could the CDC Make That Mistake?’ The government’s disease-fighting agency is conflating viral and antibody tests, compromising a few crucial metrics that governors depend on to reopen their economies. Pennsylvania, Georgia, Texas, and other states
What a fucking mess.
#COVID19 One of the most encouraging sign in U.S. is the decline in testing positivity rate. Unfortunately the data seem compromised due to the fact that CDC and some states are conflating RT-PCR and antibody tests via and
CDC improperly combining antibody & viral tests in US national test counts
This is an absolutely jaw-dropping fuck-up.
Oh goodness. Just astounding.
The CDC conflating viral and antibody test results in its COVID-19 data is, in the words of one expert, "a mess." Big story from +
Wondering why we have the most deaths on the planet? Because we do stupid shit like this.
This is a tragedy
7) Since then, has selflessly thrown himself deep into the invaluable work of , which has single-handedly not only replaced amid it abdication of to report national COVID testing volume, but also held it accountable!
#NewSARS US - Testing obfuscation Some states & mixing antibody & virus detection testing in total counts. Difference between CDC data, State reports & covidtracker. What happens when metric becomes tests? Instead of # of cases in our community!
The Atlantic: The CDC was purposefully reporting innacurate testing figures by including antibody tests. By conflating the results, the CDC overstates the country’s ability to test people for sickness and artificially lowers positive test results
Texas is one of four states that combine data for viral and antibody tests -- making it impossible to separate old COVID-19 cases from new ones, and harder to spot outbreaks.
We talked about this on the show the other day- if this is true we need to stop doing it right away.
Un-freaking-believable. Robert Redfield must resign as director of the CDC, NOW. He may be a good scientist but he is not an epidemiologist. He has proven to be a weak and ineffectual leader of CDC at a critical moment in history.
How Could the CDC Make That Mistake?’ The government’s disease-fighting agency is conflating viral and antibody tests, compromising a few crucial metrics that governors depend on to reopen their economies. Pennsylvania, Georgia, Texas are doing the same.
I am Jack's complete lack of faith in the CDC
Ugh. What a mess. This screws with everything from guidance surrounding reopening to the accuracy of forecasting models.
“How could the CDC make that mistake? This is a mess.”
I would laugh if I wasn’t crying
Is the conflating viral and antibody tests for #covid19? #CDC
“The government’s disease-fighting agency is conflating viral and antibody tests, compromising a few crucial metrics that governors depend on to reopen their economies“
Reporting serology and PCR together to make testing numbers seem higher - a very dubious decision
This is such an indictment of government competence. Whoa. Even as a gov’t skeptic, I’m shocked. Don’t forget they also screwed up initial tests. The CDC and States Are Misreporting COVID-19 Test Data - The Atlantic
The CDC and States Are Misreporting COVID-19 Test Data - The Atlantic
It also just conflated viral and antibody testing in its reporting, undermining states' ability to actually see if they're doing sufficient testing to safely reopen 2/
🤯 The CDC and States Are Misreporting COVID-19 Test Data - The Atlantic
Here's an interesting wrinkle. The CDC has been conflating results for two different types of coronavirus tests. The blending of viral and antibody tests make the actual percent-positive rate impossible to know.
We are living in a failed state.
this is so concerning - the CDC has conflated negative viral tests and negative antibody tests and reported those numbers together:
Unreal ▶️ The CDC and States Are Misreporting #COVID19 Test Data - ⁦
This is mind-boggling and unreal. How is such a catastrophic mistake even possible?
Any criticism of the CDC is rank science denialism. Respect for science requires us to abandon our critical faculties entirely, of course. Anything else is irrational.
Just when you thought it couldn't get worse. thanks
4/ I won't review 2 major tests for Covid: viral vs antibody. Lots of good primers; eg, . To interpret a test, one must understand the differences ( may have forgotten this: ), including the timing: viral early; antibody later.
CDC combines viral & antibody tests, no wonder states are doing it.
Does testing for #Covid_19 “confuse” the or do they just not know what they are doing? They definitely need a primer from and
Pretty much a guarantee that long standing career scientists at (the folks who have led the charge on every public health emergency from HIV to EVALI) are not the ones combining #SARSCoV2 PCR and serology tests.
I don't have a mental model for how this mistake could be made. Anyone?
