"We’re watching an intellectual revolution undertaken by a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts - Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness."
The current intellectual movement is "counting on the guilt-ridden, self-flagellating nature of traditional American progressives, who will not stand up for themselves, and will walk to the Razor voluntarily."
I am of slightly too minds about this stuff because I think most of the people raising the alarms are being a bit overly dramatic and "destroying itself" certainly fits that mold. But if you just dial it all down by 20% this is right on.
“It feels liberating to say after years of tiptoeing around —the American left has lost its mind. It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts,Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations... Matt Taibbi
“...instead of hearing what our differences are and how we might address those issues, newspaper readers will instead be presented with page after page of people professing to agree with one another. That’s not agitation, that’s misinformation.” —
This is a spectacularly important post. Everyone in or around journalism needs to read it. The vast, vast majority of journalists who feel this way do not feel empowered to speak up. I say all this as someone who disagrees with Taibbi frequently.
"[T]he American left has lost its mind. It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness."
The News Media Is Destroying Itself
The American Press is Destroying Itself
The post is absolutely indispensable.
I hesitated before linking to this piece by Matt Taibbi. The fact that I hesitated was what convinced me to post it. I urge every journalist to read it...
"It feels liberating to say after years of tiptoeing around the fact, but the American left has lost its mind."
Matt Taibbi writes an impassioned polemic on behalf of Lee Fang, denouncing those who smeared him and those who failed to defend him out of cowardice
I encourage everyone to read the entirety of ’s column.
Matt Taibbi () is one of the fiercest left-wing investigative reporters, having spent decades in the trenches exposing corrupt corporations and politicians on multiple continents. He thinks there's something wrong with America's liberal newsrooms.
I know everyone is sharing this, but add my voice to those saying 's precision-guided tactical nuke is a must-read.
Has the media given up on itself? Matt Taibbi with an incredible takedown of the civil war within the nation's newsrooms:
"The American left has lost its mind. It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness." , not holding back

This is very good. The American Press Is Destroying Itself, by
Every single word of this piece: “In a business where the first job requirement was once the willingness to ask tough questions, we’ve become afraid to ask obvious ones.”
The American Press Is Destroying Itself by
this is very good and a lot of people should feel embarrassed rather than empowered right now
When he’s right, he’s right. Read on the Jacobin moment in our country’s newsrooms.
Media criticism horseshoe aside, the Tiabbi piece is worth grappling with.
this is so stupid lol
The American Press Is Destroying Itself by Provocative and on point
Fear, conformity, forced confessions and fealty to mistruths prevails as a wave of wokeness rips through American newsrooms
“The media in the last four years has devolved into a succession of moral manias.” I’m with on that much, at least
More than one thing can be true at the same time. This is one of the things that is true right now.
I've found this new article to provide the most thoughtful narrative of the destruction of American news media and, by implication, the destruction of academia as well. I'm still optimistic, knowing that people with no salary to protect WILL speak up.
“The media in the last 4 years has devolved into a succession of moral manias. We are told the Most Important Thing Ever is happening for days or weeks at a time, until subjects are abruptly dropped and forgotten, but the tone of warlike emergency remains”
"Eight news organizations dealt with internal uprisings. Most involved groups of reporters and staffers demanding the firing or reprimand of colleagues who’d made politically “problematic” editorial or social media decisions." via #AmericanMaoism
I left #journalism albeit trend journalism awhile ago. If you’ve read #Whotown, like Sarah Rosen, I often felt nudged to “color stories” per editors’ proclivities. I agree with this article. “R.I.P. the media as we know it.” cc: ⁦
For what this is doing to journalism, this article by Matt Taibi is essential
Some interesting home truths for the media here in this US piece by Matt Taibbi
An absolutely indispensable read from about our current moment and the trouble ahead for journalism as authoritarian instincts appear to rise across the political spectrum.
"Today no one with a salary will stand up for colleagues like Lee Fang. Our brave truth-tellers make great shows of shaking fists at our parody president, but not one of them will talk honestly about the fear running through their own newsrooms."
“The main thing accomplished by removing those types of editorials from newspapers — apart from scaring the hell out of editors — is to shield readers from knowledge of what a major segment of American society is thinking.”
"The media in the last four years has devolved into a succession of moral manias. We are told the Most Important Thing Ever is happening for days or weeks at a time, until subjects are abruptly dropped and forgotten".
Sigh, we need better protocols for sensemaking. These three articles should exist *in relationship* to each other (-ish), not in the polarizing void of 1D feeds. 1/ 2/ 3/ Alas.
Important article. The American Press Is Destroying Itself by
Taibbi is certainly not without problems, **See Rolling Stone article about the UVA Case** but he's dead on here. The American Press Is Destroying Itself by

The American Press Is Destroying Itself - Reporting by Matt Taibbi
All is saying here is what is privately said among journalists all the time, in DMs and over drinks, but never in public for fear of professional retribution. Virtually no journalist who draws a salary from a left/liberal outlet will take the risk
"Writers and editors will shape views to avoid upsetting colleagues... Instead of hearing differences, newspaper readers will be presented with page after page of people professing to agree with one another. That’s not agitation, that’s misinformation."
"In a business where the first job requirement was once the willingness to ask tough questions, we’ve become afraid to ask obvious ones."
"Our brave truth-tellers make great shows of shaking fists at our parody president, but won't talk honestly about the fear running through their own newsrooms."
"The media in the last four years has devolved into a succession of moral manias...each passing day sees more scenes that recall something closer to cult religion than politics."
Yes it is. For many of the reasons given.
Matt Taibbi in fine form: The American Press Is Destroying Itself.
"The news media is destroying itself" - this is a disturbing read on the revolts taking place in US media "In a business where the first job requirement was the willingness to ask tough questions, we’ve become afraid to ask obvious ones"
Fantastic piece by about the stupidity and cowardice of American journalists in the face of ideological witch-burning.
It’s good to see journalists denouncing the witch hunt. The case that describes is especially nuts. This isn’t social justice. It’s social panic. Yet even amid social panic, rational self-interest prevails (short thread)...
"American left has lost its mind. It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness."
Really appreciated this piece, which arrives at the same metaphor that I used for my related article on woke media extremism: the French Revolution.
.⁦⁩: The American left has lost its mind. It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness.
In MSM newsrooms across North America debate over the extent to which racism is rampent in society is now forbidden. The only acceptable/publishable position left is one that purports the US and Cdn are actually akin to Nazi Germany.
Matt Taibbi criticizes the American left
Important read on media self-immolation. "They are counting on the guilt-ridden, self-flagellating nature of traditional American progressives, who will not stand up for themselves, and will walk to the Razor voluntarily."
"The media in the last four years has devolved into a succession of moral manias..."
"It feels liberating to say . . . the American left has lost its mind. It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness."
“It’s been learned in these episodes we may freely misreport reality, so long as the political goal is righteous…press activism is limited to denouncing and shaming colleagues for insufficient fealty”.
Matt actually gets at the problem here. Lee has seen grotesque acts of violence take the lives of his loved ones, both from the police and from common criminals. He thinks valuing only one set of lives is immoral. So do most people. But not some people.
This is *really* good by on the Cultural Revolution taking place in the American media.
The American Press Is Destroying Itself - Reporting by Matt Taibbi
Many have shared this piece. The line that jumped out at me from it was: "...read, as so many recent “apologies” have, like a note written by a hostage."
Relatedly: what am I even doing agreeing with Matt Taibbi?
Add Matt Taibbi to the convo about turmoil in the press

"It feels liberating to say after years of tiptoeing around the fact, but the American left has lost its mind." #politics #worldsgonemad
Not generally a huge fan of , but this is a masterpiece that captures our current media moment
Thanks, Matt Taibbi, for taking on the effect that the woke left is having on the press. What's going on is disgraceful and dangerous to free politics
It feels liberating to say after years of tiptoeing around the fact, but the American left has lost its mind. It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations
"It's been learned in these episodes we may freely misreport reality, so long as the political goal is righteous." This, from longtime investigative reporter —one of the few working journalists who really speaks truth to power—is straight fire.
.: "Our brave truth-tellers make great shows of shaking fists at our parody president, but not one of them will talk honestly about the fear running through their own newsrooms".
Thank you for writing this.
Extremely weird times we're living in. 'The American Press Is Destroying Itself' by
A sobering assessment: The American Press Is Destroying Itself by
The American Press Is Destroying Itself
A brilliant article on the bizarre, authoritarian cultism that is now all around us: in this case as manifested in the large news corporations. (Dare I mention that this is a theme of my book THE TYRANNY OF OPINION? But it's become even worse since then.)
This is an incredible article documenting the destruction of the American news media. By a left winger no less.
There should be *more* reporting featuring *more* voices and *more* social problems, not narrowing them to one single Narrative that has you set upon if you deviate from it by reporting the pain of someone who lost their family to crime
This is a pretty depressing piece about the decline of the US press in recent years. “In a business where the first job requirement was once the willingness to ask tough questions, we’ve become afraid to ask obvious ones.”
