This is bad. ICE just told students here on student visas that if their school is going online-only this fall, the students must depart the United States and cannot remain through the fall semester.
On the Trump administration’s decision to kick international students out of the country if their universities go online: a short and angry thread.
ICE is telling international students on F-1 and M-1 visas that if their school is doing online-only courses they must leave the country or transfer to a place with in-person instruction—or they'll be deemed in the US illegally and subject to deportation.
Another disturbing new order from the Trump administration: "Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load and remain in the US...".
If you are on a student visa (F-1), and your school is online only in the Fall, you can't stay in the US. At this point I stop believing in stupidity, this is just pure malice.
The Trump administration is using ICE to threaten universities into teaching in person by threatening international students with deportation if they're all online. This is a death to Americans policy, in addition to a massive fuck you to intl students.
NEW: ICE just put down a notice to students in the US on student visas that they must leave the United States if their classes are going to be only online this fall. If they want to stay, ICE says they must transfer to a school with in person instruction.
In the name of covid, a naked attack by the administration on foreign students and universities. (and, with lower educational exports, a likely major hit to the trade balance, dear to the President. ) Maybe I take too personally, but it stinks and hurts.
Our government is full of heartless, cruel, disgusting, monsters. They are temporarily making it so international students are not allowed to take only online classes, even if their school decides to move to online to *save human lives*.
We must protect our international students and scholars. This is totally unacceptable.
You think you've reached the bottom of the barrel of cruelty with this administration, but there is no bottom. Pitting the welfare and education of international students against institutions trying to save lives. I have no words.
The new policy is appalling. International students enrich our classes, universities, and communities. All students are welcome here, and this cruel policy can't change this.
Foreign students will get kicked out of the US if their universities are going all online this fall. Seriously. This is cruel.
university pals: ICE just announced that those here on student visas at schools moving to online-only courses this fall must either transfer to a school that offers in-person instruction or leave the country.
ICE announced that, for universities that shift instruction 100% online, their international undergraduate and graduate students will not be allowed to stay in the United Stares
SSE is working with on a response to the decision by #ICE to invalidate the visas of #internationalstudents whose U.S. universities are online-only. This policy will be devastating for the students whose lives will be uprooted. (1/2)
"The U.S. Department of State will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools and/or programs that are fully online for the fall semester nor will U.S. Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States"
This is infuriating. If, for everyone's health, universities have to shift classes online, their international students will be expected to leave the country. This is terrible policy, seemingly crafted to do harm to others for the benefit of no one.
ICE has announced that international students will have to leave the U.S. or transfer schools if their colleges are moving to online classes in the fall - this will displace so many people.
This is an astonishgly cruel & absolutely poorly thought out move from the US administration. Appalling!
This is completely unacceptable and disastrous for US higher education. International students are an integral part of the success of our STEM programs in particular | SEVP modifies exemptions for nonimmigrant students taking online courses in Fall 2020
The Trump administration is forcing us to choose between risking our students' health by pushing in-person classes this Fall, or risking having our students deported. This is unacceptable.
I am not a lawyer, so I’d like to think there’s some defensible reading of this announcement that avoids requiring all of our foreign grad students to leave the country in a few weeks.

We must defend international student/workers against the latest assault on their lives by ICE. We call on to respond to this attack with a statement on how they will support our community. , let's protect each other.
Must-read for everyone in academia, irrespective of field. One opening: "F-1 students attending schools adopting a hybrid model—that is, a mixture of online and in person classes—will be allowed to take *more* than one class or three credit hours online."
This is really ill-conceived: . It will mean that a large number of students who have already enrolled will spend the next year in limbo. And it will force others into taking classes in person. The only rationale seems to be mindless cruelty.
Madness. Our immigration policy is simultaneously based on the notions that COVID is a dire threat (canceling entire visa categories) & no problem at all (telling foreign students they must attend in person, effectively forcing many schools to reopen).
I'm inclined to think this will die a rapid death. Still, every dept should consider now how to rapidly add a physical presence requirement for some PhD course codes (e.g., related to data collection & use of US data collection tools).
will deport *LEGAL* international students who are not taking in-person classes this fall. So the options for these students are: Face death, or face deportation. There is no bottom to the cruelty. #AbolishICE
for those who believe in hell, there is a warm place reserved for the folks who imagined and wrote these procedures. In any case karma is b**** you wait for it
This is an act of malice and further weakens science in this country. How can one administration be so petulant and shortsighted?
ICE just announced that international students on F-1 and M-1 visas have to leave the US if their university goes fully online for the Fall semester. This is wrong on so many levels, I’m appalled...

I came here to be amongst the best minds from across the globe. Not to be a scapegoat for deepening the wedge for political gains. Now I understand the world historically has been built on flawed systems that promote divide and rule... 1/6
Oh, they just made it even more worserest.
Hi, long-time listen first-time caller! #TWiEvo I saw this and thought the team (especially ) would be taken aback by new ICE rules for the Fall. #StudentBody #Colaboration
Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students whose schools move online-only this Fall will have to depart the country, says ICE. And apparently they will have to take some classes in person if they are offered.
In a message to an academic listserv two weeks ago I pointed out the potential consequences of COVID-related remote teaching for international students in the US and the UK. My message is still in moderation limbo. Meanwhile, this with today's date
but omg, ICE just announces online-only international students cannot stay in US ...
F-1 students whose universities are moving to online only will be forced to depart the US. Who is it supposed to help? What is a possible benefit of this? I genuinely don't understand the motivation. (E.g. it literally moves US money out of the US.)
The vile and hateful nature of permeates his administration. Despicable to the core. And yes, I’m thinking about the latest #immigration move by this racist and insular government of the United States.
Trump is effectively trying to destroy the higher education system in the USA. China, which is now seriously building it's own university system must be laughing. Let's hope this is thrown out by courts.
This is incredibly fucked up. In addition to absolutely bungling #CoronaVirus response, now plans to deport all foreign students if their schools decide to prioritize health and adopt distance learning while the pandemic rages.
Madness!!! "The U.S. Department of State will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools and/or programs that are fully online for the fall semester nor will U.S. Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States.”
It’s a Trump twofer: make foreigners leave and cripple higher education.
Trump is trying to do a purge of international students, while 'sticking it' to universities that are hesitant to reopen
Kicking out international students in this way is moronic and petty spitefulness: SEVP modifies temporary exemptions for nonimmigrant students taking online courses during fall 2020 semester
Is the Trump administration trying to punish colleges & universities that are taking the pandemic seriously, or is this just another expression of the administration's xenophobia?

I am more and more thinking that Donald Trump is a robot controlled by Canadian universities. F1 students in unis going online (like Harvard) have to leave the country. Seriously, this is really horrific.
Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States. Active students currently in the US enrolled in such programs must depart the country🙁
What exactly is permitted under this (odious policy's) clause?
