"Can we just proceed by acknowledging what literally everyone quietly knows, which is that the dominant majority of progressive people simply don’t believe in the value of free speech anymore?"
“Please, think for a minute and consider: what does it say when a completely generic endorsement of free speech and open debate is in and of itself immediately diagnosed as anti-progressive, as anti-left?” h/t
"What does it say when a completely generic endorsement of free speech and open debate is in and of itself immediately diagnosed as anti-progressive, as anti-left?"
This is why I no longer argue with people who deny this. At this point, anyone who does is either a moron or a liar.
"You want to argue that free speech is bad, fine. You want to adopt a dominance politics that (you imagine) will result in you being the censor, fine. But just do that. Own that."
The left surrenders free expression at its own risk. Another concerned leftist, Freddie DeBoer: "For God’s sake, let go of the pretense... Social justice politics are plainly opposed to free speech. That is the most obvious political fact imaginable."
I've talked to people in favor of censorship who come from all parts of the world, and generally speaking, they're more honest about it overseas. In U.S. arguing against free speech is like arguing against baseball and apple pie, so you have to cloak it.

This is very good and seems right to me
