Breaking News: President Trump commuted the sentence of his longtime friend Roger Stone on seven felony crimes just before he was to report to prison
Trump commutes Roger Stone’s sentence, using the power of his office to spare his longtime friend and adviser from prison.
There are 16 Friday nights left between now and the election, and if these past weeks are any clue, I suspect there is going to be some new outrage quietly announced every one of them.
Shorter Stone: I didn’t snitch “He knows I was under enormous pressure to turn on him,” Mr. Stone told the journalist Howard Fineman on Friday shortly before the announcement. “It would have eased my situation considerably. But I didn’t.”
Unsurprising, but still shocking. Trump grotesquely mocks the rule of law, favoring friends who lie for him with (literally) a get out of jail free card.
Tucker Carlson pushed for clemency. So did Hannity. So did Matt Gaetz. Within the WH, very few did, tho two people familiar with the discussions said Larry Kudlow, a longtime friend of Stone, was among those who did.
We need to permanently constrain the President's powers to issue pardons and commute sentences. Especially given political polarization, our system is not designed to address open criminality in the White House.
Stone said on Fox last month that while he’s not looking for a role from the campaign, his biggest fear of going to prison other than his health was “that I may not be free to do everything within my power to re-elect this president.”
Senator Chris Coons
A jury convicted Roger Stone of seven felonies including witness tampering and lying to Congress, but he is willing to lie for the President, and the President is rewarding him for it. This act of corruption strikes at the heart of the rule of law.

A president has the authority to commute but also the con’l duty to see to it that the laws are faithfully executed. How does the latter square with AG Barr’s statement that the Stone conviction was “righteous?”
Stone is Trump’s longest-serving adviser and has played key role in Trump’s would-be campaigns+the one Trump eventually launched. Stone quit in August 2015, he was still trying to help Trump win. That is what he says he is going to do for next 3.5 months.

Hey, boasts of sexual assault, strong arms Ukraine for political favors, lies every hour, denies science, so he commutes prison sentence for a friend. Big hey. Law is so overrated

I’d have bet a fairly large sum this wasn’t going to happen before November 4th.
