A new study in the NEJM demonstrates this. Self-collected swabs (tongue, nasal, and mid-turbinate) perform very nearly as well as professionally administered NP swabs and may actually have even higher viral titres. (h/t )
Patient-collected nose swabs, either mid-turbinate or lower nasal, are highly correlated (r=0.78) to NP swabs for quantifying SARS-CoV-2 virus levels. This is great news for easier collection methods for tracking the COVID-19 virus
