NYT: Pete Hamill, Quintessential New York Journalist, Dies at 85
The last of the giants. Funny, passionate, brilliant, fearless, knew everything and everybody. Hired me at Daily News, got himself fired before I arrived. "Never mind, kid, my mother arrived from Belfast on day of Wall St Crash, so could be worse."
A part, a big part, of the soul of New York is gone.
"A high school dropout who turned a gift for storytelling, a fascination with characters and a romance with tabloid newspapers into a storied career as a New York journalist" Beautiful obit for Pete Hamill by Bob McFadden...
Pete Hamill RIP He was hard-boiled & sentimental, honest about himself & what he saw. A brilliant writer (of fiction as well as journalism) whom I have loved reading since I was a teenager. So many of us will miss his distinctive voice & worldview.
Correction of the day: "The earlier version also referred incorrectly to Mr. Hamill's sister, Kathleen Fischetti, who survives him. She is a former editor for U.S. Navy publications, not a human rights lawyer."
End of an era with the passing of Pete Hamill. Please find some of his books to read. His columns from The New York Post are amazing. Deadline Artists on HBO about him & Jimmy Breslin is worth watching. RIP maestro. Your words influenced my life!
I confess that I read very little of Pete Hamill's newspaper journalism. But I read and loved a number of his books, which happily will remain long after his departure.
News is a verb. This verb hurts.
