This is HUGE news from @AbbottNews with a COVID-19 antigen test requiring no lab equipment!
HOWEVER:
1. Can *only* be done by CLIA labs
2. Can *only* be done from symptomatic individuals
3. Requires a healthcare provider
1/ Still learning about new Abbott rapid test but a few immediate impressions from what's circulating
- high sensitivity & specificity
- can be used - like device-based rapid tests already with FDA authorization (BD, Quidel) - at workplaces, schools etc.
This is pretty big (and good) news. They are promising ~50 million~ tests a month by early Oct. For comparison, the country has run roughly 75 million tests *total* so far.
