Powerful story of the real history of an oversimplified story -- Sophia Farrar DID act to help Kitty Genovese
When I was a kid in Queens in 1964, the rape and murder of Kitty Genovese terrified everyone, as did the popular myth that no one came to her aid. But Sophia Farrar did, risking her own life, and just died at 92.
"It's clear she went to great efforts to save and comfort Kitty, giving the lie to the idea that no one helped and no one cared. There ought to be a statue to her in Kew Gardens." RIP Sophie Farrar.
Everyone knows, or thinks they know, the story of Kitty Genovese, who was stabbed to death while 37 apathetic Queens neighbors did nothing. But one woman *did* do something, and even cradled the victim as she passed away. Her name was Sophia Farrar. RIP
