Auto-antibodies against type I IFNs in patients with life-threatening COVID-19
Around 10% of patients with severe COVID-19 disease had auto-antibodies against different interferons. Suggests a real potential opportunity to screen for these antibodies w/ an ELISA at admission, and consider therapeutic plasma exchange for treatment.

This is incredible and alarming. 10% of people with COVID pneumonia (ie very ill) have antibodies against their OWN interferon (bodies immune response to fight a virus), and the vast majority of them are male.

The mechanisms working upstream can be different, but the overall deleterious effects are pretty similar, involving genetic variations that impair interferon production leading to life-threatening #Covid19
Type I Interferons are critical to the body's ability or inability to response to #sarscov2 infection. Viral inhibition, genetic deficiencies and even autoantibodies can play a role in limiting the IFN response and lead to severe #COVID19.
And autoimmune antibodies that neutralize or block the interferons that #Covid19 patients are making in response to #SARSCoV2 are also implicated in severe cases
