It is impossible to read this exceptional story on Trump's taxes & not conclude he is a crook, his kids are crooks, his companies are badly mismanaged & his financial future is precarious. His creditors own him. We need to know who they are.
Of note in this blockbuster story - there will be additional stories coming in the next few weeks.

I think some people are a bit confused about how the shell game works in this great piece of reporting on the Trump Organization, so here's a quick model that will hopefully clarify it a bit

Starting in 2010, Trump claimed, and received, an income tax refund totaling $72.9 million — all the federal income tax he had paid for 2005-08, plus interest. The legitimacy of that refund is at the center of a years-long audit battle with the IRS.
Call me a skeptic, but I’m not sure that this is what working class voters in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan wanted: A billionaire who hardly pays any income taxes...

Ivanka Trump reported receiving payments from a consulting company she co-owned, totaling $747,622 - the exact sum her father claimed as a tax deduction for unnamed consultants. Trump Org employing her and paying her as a consultant?

Biggest concern from Trump’s taxes is $421 million in debt. No other government employee could get a security clearance with that much financial risk because it leaves him susceptible to blackmail or bribery while entrusted with our most sensitive secrets.
In summary, Trump is a catastrophically terrible businessman who pissed away all his inheritance and profits on stupid investments and then uses those loses and shady accounting to pay no federal income taxes.
He is personally responsible for loans and other debts totaling $421 million, with most of it coming due within four years. Should he win, his lenders could be placed in the unprecedented position of whether to foreclose on a sitting president.

The Times has obtained tax-return data for President Trump extending over more than two decades. It shows his finances under stress, beset by losses that he aggressively employs to avoid paying taxes and hundreds of millions in debt coming due.
They got the tax returns.
One reason Trump likely didn't want the returns public is that reporters would figure out some of the tricks he was pulling on the IRS For instance it wasn't obvious in the returns some of these consulting fees were for Ivanka. But the NYT figured it out
The tax returns show that Trump made more far from the Miss Universe in Moscow—$2.3M—than from others he staged. The money came from the Agalarov clan which is close to Putin. No one who is not president would get a security clearance afterward.

Just an example of how well the New York Times is able to keep things under wraps: This bombshell story was produced by colleagues on my desk, and I had no clue it was even in the works.
I was called a welfare queen, as were many Black women & it was said that we all drove Cadillacs & ate lobster. Now we know that Trump is the ultimate welfare queen: abusing the system & raking in millions from the government as he lives in a golden palace.
This detail: "In 2017, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association paid at least $397,602 to the Washington hotel...during its four-day World Summit in Defense of Persecuted Christians." How does $400k spent at a Trump hotel benefit persecuted Christians?

“In 2018, for example, Mr. Trump announced in his disclosure that he had made at least $434.9 million. The tax records deliver a very different portrait of his bottom line: $47.4 million in losses.”
Hey MAGA: This guy is a failure, and you got suckered by him.
I don’t care about Trump’s taxes, but notice that those who tell you this is all about election integrity and “rule of law” rely on illegally obtained documents to try and influence an election.
Will we get to see him go broke? From 2014 to 2016 he liquidated essentially all his stocks (and bonds) for $220M, thus missing a 50% market rise since. He lost $47M in 2018. He’s personally responsible for $421M in loans and debt coming due by 2025. Etc.

When President Trump said that he would run America like he ran his businesses, it turns out he was telling the truth. Loss, debt, failure, and fleecing working Americans.
Know we know one reason why hid his tax returns. This self-proclaimed billionaire paid $750 in US income taxes. But he paid $16,000 in taxes to Panama.
I wonder to what lengths his base will go to defend this when they have paid more and done with less?
Here's why Trump is fighting so hard to avoid turning over his tax returns: staggering business losses, potentially massive fraud, and payment of virtually no income taxes at all.
2. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the WH, he paid another $750 He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years — largely because he reported losing more money than he made

Many good reasons to emphasize that the president's tax returns make clear that he is either a liar or a loser, but also: When the rich don't pay taxes, they cheat Americans out of schools, good roads, functional bridges, fire departments, etc etc.
This is the kind of journalism that makes me proud to work at The New York Times.
“Mr. Trump has an established track record of stiffing his lenders. But the tax returns reveal that he has failed to pay back far more money than previously known: a total of $287 million since 2010.”
The fact that an American on minimum wage paid more income tax than Trump ($750 in a year) tells you all you need to know about the charlatan in the White House Is it any wonder he has been so keen for us to not to see his tax returns?
We always knew there was a reason was desperate to hide his returns. Now we know exactly why—because he’s a failed businessman who’s rigged his taxes to pay way less than working Americans.
The president pays more in taxes to foreign governments than to the United States. $750 to the I.R.S., $15,598 to Panama, $145,400 to India and $156,824 to the Philippines.

So much for the so-called "successful businessman" argument.
Since 2000, Trump has reported losses of $315. 6 million at his golf courses and for all of its Trumpworld allure, his Washington hotel, opened in 2016, has not fared much better. Its tax records show losses through 2018 of $55.5 million.

One last thought about this story before going dark for Yom Kippur: the words in it that should scare Trump and his campaign the most are “additional articles will be published in the coming weeks.”
A corrupt family enterprise: “some of the consulting fees are identical to those reported by Mr. Trump’s daughter raises the question of whether this was a mechanism the president used to compensate his adult children involved with his business.”
Remarkable scope of reporting. “...All of the information The Times obtained was provided by sources with legal access to it.”
This is a national security issue. Americans have the right to know who are the holders of Trump’s debt. This is a gigantic debt that he personally guaranteed & it’s due soon Who holds what of Trump’s debt is a matter of national security now
Now that Trump's feeling better, can we get back to talking about his financials?

Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the White House, he paid another $750. He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years

Just the first four paragraphs. Good God. Just shocking. But not at all surprising. In fact, some were screaming about it, while others weren’t listening.
I have apparently paid way more taxes than Donald Trump over the last couple decades, and that really, really pisses me off.
“So how did Trump escape nearly all taxes? Persistent losses…That equation is a key element of the alchemy of Mr. Trump’s finances: using the proceeds of his celebrity to purchase and prop up risky businesses, then wielding their losses to avoid taxes.”
“Trump is personally responsible for loans & debts totaling $421 million, most of it coming due within four years. Should he win re-election, his lenders could be placed in the unprecedented position of weighing whether to foreclose on a sitting president”
NEW YORK TIMES DROPS THE MOTHERF*CKING MIC
I read the whole story and I’m still amazed. I know tax accountants who know every trick and I’m still amazed. $750...
Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the WH, he paid another $750. He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years — largely because he reported losing much more money than he made.
It's extraordinary to get this reporting. Then to write it like this too: direct, elegant, unflinching. Total master class.
"Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency" (same the year after). Somebody making minimum wage in California (~$24,960 / year) would pay more than double that (~$1,840). Seems fair - in a sorta American way. Not.
We can call this "legal" tax "avoidance," I guess, rather than the kind of illegal tax evasion we associate with the ultra-rich in other countries. But that's a distinction without a difference, tax evasion is largely the poor man's tax avoidance.
Wow. Tuesday night just got a LOT more interesting... "Trump’s Taxes Show Chronic Losses and Years of Income Tax Avoidance"
also, "All of the information The Times obtained was provided by sources with legal access to it"
What a fascinating read! ⁦⁩ paid $750 income taxes the year he won the presidency. He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years — largely because he reported losing much more money than he made.

Once he lost the court case to keep them secret ( unlike previous recent presidents) they were going to be published, but Trump’s lawyers were fighting to delay until after Nov 3
What a lede “Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the White House, he paid another $750. “He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years ...”
Ivanka Trump appears to have received $747,622 from a consulting company she co-owned that matched consulting fees claimed as tax deductions by the Trump Organization.
I don't think there is enough time to process the Trump Tax dump before the holiday. Kinda stuck on this: Mr. Trump’s avoidance of income taxes is one of the most striking discoveries in his tax returns.
Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency & no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years, according to which obtained tax-return data for more than 2 decades for and his business organization.
"Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the White House, he paid another $750. He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years." has > 20 years of taxes from Trump.
The tax returns that Mr. Trump has long fought to keep private tell a story fundamentally different from the one he has sold to the American public.
The reported paid $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 & 2017, & no $$ at all in 10 of the previous 15 years: In 2016, as speculated about why he wouldn’t disclose his returns, he interjected “that makes me smart.”
Some voters may not care about this type of stuff. “He’s corrupt, but cares about us” is a typical response. But elites must. The survival of American democracy will depend on elite consensus regarding acceptable bounds of public conduct.
AND yet, his supporters will not care: “Transcripts of his main federal tax form, the 1040, from 1985 to 1994, were obtained by The Times in 2019. They showed that...Mr. Trump lost more money than nearly any other individual American taxpayer.”
The average Joe says see this and says “he’s a failure! See, I told you so!” Rich people say, “that’s a smart mfr.” What definitely proves however is that he is an unethical fraud. And he’s greedy. He could’ve afforded more than $750. Damn
“Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the White House, he paid another $750. “He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years ...”
The Times has Trump's tax returns: Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017. He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years — largely because he reported losing much more money than he made.
Let me add to the praises of my colleagues for continuing to produce vital work like the Trump tax returns investigation. (This front page is a sight to behold.)
Short version: 's rep as a great businessman is faker than pro wrestling. He is, however, a top notch con man.
I don’t understand. I am not a billionaire or millionaire, but i pay more taxes than ⁦⁩ ! I am happy to pay taxes since it is a civic duty to be a citizen of our great country!
Reading the NYT reporting on Trump’s leaked financials reminds me of reading merchant banking ledgers from the Middle Ages: they made money on super profitable trading routes, and dumped it into barely productive land to get more status with the nobles...
Trump wrote off the $70,000 he spent on hair styling during the Apprentice.

LONG-CONCEALED RECORDS SHOW TRUMP'S CHRONIC LOSSES AND YEARS OF TAX AVOIDANCE (New York Times)
Mind boggling. The deceit, the lies. We all know it. We have to get the criminal out of the White House.
Trump’s Taxes Show Chronic Losses and Years of Income Tax Avoidance
"The New York Times has obtained tax-return data extending over more than two decades for Mr. Trump and the hundreds of companies that make up his business organization, including detailed information from his first two years in office."
First, we must vote this man out of office. Then, we must change a tax system so deeply flawed that he could get away with all of this.
The president often claims he was not aware of a story coming/that reporters didn't call. A Trump Org lawyer is quoted in the story
Read it for yourself here. Despite the euphemistic language you get to the bottom of the article (eventually) and realise this is a total dud.
“Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the White House, he paid another $750.”
Good grief! The really IS this crazy: Mr. Trump's financial filings "do [not] reveal any previously unreported connections to Russia."
Oh my god it's all a scam. Every bit of it.
Whoa. Trump's taxes. Breaking news. He paid $750 in federal taxes, total, in 2016.
The American people deserved to know this a long time ago.
Amazing reporting by and on Trump's taxes A few additional thoughts: 1/
That’s the line that’s gonna hurt him most: Ultimately, Mr. Trump has been more successful playing a business mogul than being one in real life.
If you vote for Trump after reading this, you’re even stupider than he thinks you are
The thing that jumped out at me in the Times story is not that conman swindler Donald Trump paid $750 in taxes, but that conman swindler Franklin Graham paid at least $397,602 in 2017 to Trump’s hotel from his “charity.” This country is so corrupt.
The release of Trump's taxes lends credence to the idea that he entered politics either to boost struggling businesses or to start new ventures (maybe in media?): "Hanging over him is a decade-long audit... over the legitimacy of a $72.9m refund..."
The amazing thing here is he knew he’d be under severe public scrutiny, and *still* — even while president — managed to pay less in all of 2017 than someone making $50,000/year pays in two months.
"In his first year in the White House, [Trump] paid... $750" in income taxes. "He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years."
Remember, if you say average Americans care about rich people getting away with this sort of thing, you are an out of touch elitist.
BREAKING: Trump’s Taxes Show Chronic Losses and Years of Income Tax Avoidance “Ultimately, Mr. Trump has been more successful playing a business mogul than being one in real life”
EVERY speculation about Trump's taxes is true. 1/
Donald Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. $750. $750. Less than his campaign blows at Trump Hotel at the bar. Less than it costs Secret Service to rent his golf carts to protect him.
After this, surely President Trump would love to shut down the if he could. But...the US isn’t close to being an authoritarian regime.
*extremely Joker voice* Here we go.
Hey now! “Trump paid $750 in federal income tax the year he won the presidency. In his first year in office, he paid another $750. He paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years — largely bcs he reported losing much more money than he made.”
“... Most of Mr. Trump’s core enterprises — from his constellation of golf courses to his conservative-magnet hotel in Washington — report losing millions, if not tens of millions, of dollars year after year.”
My prediction is that his campaign will frame this as a type of genius gaming-of-the-system that is a simple reality of being highly successful in business. And, of course, his supporters will be perfectly happy with that.
The President’s taxes. Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the White House, he paid another $750 He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years.
The most chilling detail in the Times report on Trump's taxes: "Additional articles will be published in the coming weeks."
"#Trump wrote off some $26M in unexplained 'consulting fees' as a biz expense across his projects. In most cases the fees were roughly 1/5th of his income: In #Azerbaijan [he] collected $5M on a hotel deal & reported $1.1M in consulting fees..."
He's a serial bankrupter, his properties are bleeding to death, he's in debt up to his eyeballs, and creditors are circling with foreclosure signs. The "genius businessman" story is fiction. He's a salesman and a con.

In psychophysics a just-noticeable difference (JND) is the amount something must be changed in order for a difference to be noticeable. People thinking this story will be the JND undoing of Trump are wrong. In politics there is no JND, just tribal loyalty
This is truly great journalism| But will this have a political impact?| That is open question| Let us see what the first surveys show| Trump so far has defied all existing "political laws" about personal life in the US
As Trump fights for re-election, he faces hundreds of millions in debt coming due that he personally guaranteed. And if he loses his case w.the IRS, he may be forced to pay more than $100m over a tax refund that he received after declaring huge losses.
We're all looking forward to the latest defense of Trump's behavior by his supporters ("Hoax!") and their insistence that if this were true of Obama/HRC they would be thoroughly untroubled by it. Prepare for yet another journey through the looking glass.
The debate in two days should be a good time to discuss this.
Given that so many of the 'successes' of actually-existing capitalism are characterised by tax avoidance, wealth extraction, and rent-seeking, does criticising Trump count as the kind of 'extremism' that Johnson's government wants to ban from UK schools?
"This article offers an overview of The Times’s findings; additional articles will be published in the coming weeks."
“Mr. Trump has been more successful playing a business mogul than being one in real life” though he is quite adept as a professional and serial tax avoider.
Whoa - here we go.
Shouldn't this be impeachable? Such grift and corruption is unconscionable and damaging to American interests and national security. #TrumpTaxReturns
New Trump campaign theme: Yes, he is a criminal who has defrauded the American people and he’s using his office to keep his failed family afloat. But he is, by far, ***the most successful fraud in the history of our nation.***
"He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years — largely because he reported losing much more money than he made." This is my shocked face.
Trump paid $750 in taxes during the first year of his presidency, is under a decade-long audit that could cost him $100 million, racks up chronic losses in his business, and is increasingly dependent on those parts of it that raise ethical conflicts.
Financial disclosure forms v. tax returns, a case study.
"Also hanging over him is a decade-long audit battle with the Internal Revenue Service over the legitimacy of a $72.9 million tax refund that he claimed, and received, after declaring huge losses. An adverse ruling could cost him more than $100 million."
“The New York Times has obtained tax-return data extending over more than two decades for Mr. Trump and the hundreds of companies that make up his business organization, including detailed information from his first two years in office.”
Let it sink in how many Americans paid multiple times what our “billionaire" president paid in taxes...
I know a lot is being made in how little Trump paid in taxes, but after reading this massive report it is clear that the thing we should be most upset about is just how susceptible he is to being leveraged. The man is/was close to financial ruin.

Wow. Before reading this story, I thought the President had a chance. But now that the American people know the depths of his corruption—TAX AVOIDANCE—there's no way he gets more than 5-10% of the vote. Folks, it's time to face facts: Trump is toast.
Wow! Both totally unsurprising, and totally shocking. Let’s see if it has any effect on his base. And what will DOJ do to ⁦⁩?
1. The most confusing part of the NYT story is the consultant fees that seem to have been paid to Ivanka by a Trump's company (or companies) while Ivanka was working as an executive officer for those very companies.
“records offer the most detailed look yet into the president’s business empire. They reveal the hollowness, but also the wizardry, behind the self-made-billionaire image. Trump has been more successful playing a business mogul than being one in real life.”
Still, we must stan the only grifter in the world bigger than Trump, the person who managed to get paid $70k a year to do... *that* to his hair #TrumpTaxReturns
Even more damning: "the records show that he depends more and more on making money from businesses that put him in potential and often direct conflict of interest with his job as president."

Good morning. Is this 911? I’d like to report a robbery.
The NYTimes has Trump's tax returns. It's pretty scandalous -- he paid $750 in fed taxes the year he became Pres and the net year too, but will it bring any "undecideds" over to Biden? Or will they admire him all the more?

1. Clear evidence of fraud by Trump. We now know exactly why he didn’t want his tax returns released. I would not be surprised to see him do a deal with the southern district of ny to avoid jail time for tax fraud after leaving office.
Jaw-dropping NYT scoop of Trump's tax returns.
Of course we all knew this. Nevertheless, wasn't his only qualification as President the fact that he was a successful businessman? Asking for a friend.
Apparently, I paid >50 times the federal taxes that the President did. I bet you paid your fair share, too. Pardon my French, but this man is a dick.

Of course those who believe the #ResponsibleRepublican an anachronism won't be shocked by Trump's tax returns but w nailed it: "the system is rigged against" average person & rather for Trump & wealthy like him. $750 in Taxes?!
😠 the tax code offers a workaround: business owners can carry forward leftover losses to reduce taxes in future years... the nearly $1 bil in losses from his early-1990s collapse generated a tax deduction that he could use for up to 18 years going forward
That Trump only paid $750 one year in income tax is funny/sad. But much more relevant is the finding that he fraudulently claimed a $72 million tax refund and has battling an IRS audit ever since. He'll have to pay back ~$100M if/when the audit ends soon.
In 2017, #LiarInChief contributed $750 in taxes to the operations of the US government. Most years, he paid no taxes.
The craziest thing about this story is that it’s unlikely to change many votes.
