Vaccines are essential to fighting back the coronavirus. If one gets authorized in the next few months, what will that mean for 2021? One expert put it this way to me: get ready for “complexity and chaos and confusion.” Here’s my preview for 1/9
“The first vaccines may provide only moderate protection, low enough to make it prudent to keep wearing a mask. By next spring or summer, there may be several of these so-so vaccines, without a clear sense of how to choose from among them.”
Excellent reminder from that vaccine approval is a beginning, not an end, of a long, arduous, and complicated process to make the #covid19 vaccine accessible and useful.
Come spring, Americans may have their choice of several so-so vaccines — with no way of knowing which one is best.
We currently are in a mess, and even bigger troubles are waiting down the line. I was thinking that never in history we had crisis mismanagement at such a global level. Then I remembered the book ‘collapse’ (j. Diamond).
Gregory Poland might be correct that “It has not yet dawned on hardly anybody the amount of complexity and chaos and confusion that will happen in a few short months," but and others have been talking about these problems since February.
Anyone who still thinks a vaccine will quickly return things (including teaching) to 'normal' should read this - lots of clarification, some worrisome stuff, greatly recommended
Why we won’t be able to answer a simple and important question: which #covid19 vaccine performs best from the great

First, a Vaccine Approval. Then ‘Chaos and Confusion.’ Let the market decide. 'Aint capitalism wonderful?
I hope my story today is a useful introduction to that complexity. 8/9

⁦Really great read about why #COVID19 vaccine trial results will be a mess

“It has not yet dawned on hardly anybody the amount of complexity and chaos and confusion that will happen in a few short months”. So, 2021 is likely to be just as complex & chaotic as 2020. #COVID19
THAT would've been a business risk. It would've been better for us who are paying for everything, but risky for them. They want US to carry the business risk AND the health risk a master protocol could've helped reduce. Thanks to . 2/2

Most important vaccine article. The way things are set up, we won't know which vaccine the best. Therefore, American public will not know if it is getting what it paid for.
Just curious, will all the vaccine trial data be made publicly available? This seems like an opportunity for #openscience and transparency so that many scientists can vet the data. #MedTwitter

"(Fauci and other govt. scientists) wanted to test a number of vaccines all at once, against each other... a master protocol. ...But these mega-trials pose a business risk for any given vaccine maker bc they reveal how a vaccine (fares vs.) competitors."
We can't wait for a vaccine to turn up and save the day. Hope is not a strategy. Very unlikely vaccines will be as effective as we would like. We'll be lucky to get anything like the coverage we need for 'normality' before the end of 2021 (IMO) 10/

The US system of "harmonized" individual vaccine trials (vs trials grouped under a "master protocol") may have perverse impacts: the 1st vaccine authorized may be so-so, but may impede completion of trials of other promising vaccines. Zimmer
