Covid positivity rate in first round of random testing in NYC public schools: .17 percent. Lots we still don’t know, but this is great news.
Nearly three weeks into New York City’s in-person school year, only 18 coronavirus tests for students and staff members out of 10,676 have come back positive. It’s an unexpected bright spot as the city tries to recover from the pandemic.
Not actually that surprising, but good news, and schools should act accordingly but probably won’t.
Dramatic news from NYC's first round of random Covid testing in the public schools. Out of 10,000 results, only 18 positives. Praying this holds.
0.17% positivity rate in NY schools so far. Why is this surprising? It is not surprising if you have been following the worldwide epi data showing kids in k-12 are NOT major viral vectors."Surprising Results in Initial Virus Testing in N.Y.C. Schools"
Getting schools open and keeping them safe is just about the most important thing cities can be doing right now. Let's hope this holds up.
It’s still early, and winter is coming, but there is reason to feel encouraged about NYC‘s in-person classes: Random testing has so far found very few positive coronavirus cases among staff and students and I look at the numbers
Evidence is growing that schools are not super spreaders
Only 18 positives out of 10,676 people tested for the coronavirus in New York City schools: Maybe we can also… get schools back open in person… in other cities?
*NEW*: Very early, but promising data from . Out of 10,676 random tests-18 positives (13 staff & 5 students). However, only 72,000 parents have returned consent forms for testing. DOE *must* work on messaging around importance of testing.

that's puzzling. this from NYT last week: "about 500,000 children who are attending in-person classes at least one day a week"
Not at all surprising—some of us were vilified for urging schools to open: In NYC Schools, Only 18 Positive Coronavirus Tests Out of 10,676 - The New York Times
Incredible data in NYC where there are virtually no #COVID19 cases out of tens of thousands of tests during the first 3 weeks of in person school.
That the New York Times is surprised by this says more about the New York Times than it does about the unusualness of the data.
"Out of 15,111 staff members and students tested randomly by the school system in the first week of its testing regimen, the city has gotten back results for 10,676. There were only 18 positives: 13 staff members and five students."
NYT calls this surprising; not if you’ve followed the data. “Out of 15,111 staff members students tested randomly by the NYC school system, the city has gotten back results for 10,676. There were only 18 positives: 13 staff members and five students.”
This is good an unsurprising news, and the situation could be further improved with even more testing. With sufficient testing, the pandemic is over! Would be great to actually make that happen.
Important story. Note how central contact tracing is here, not just testing, to control; NYC investments in contact tracing are paying off: Surprising Results in Initial Virus Testing in N.Y.C. Schools

This is *very* encouraging, but critical notes: 1) there is low community spread 2) they have substantially reduced class sizes and 3) they're testing in a somewhat systematic way (but need to do a lot more).
"the absence of early outbreaks, if it holds, suggests that the city’s efforts for its 1.1M public school students could serve as an influential model for school districts across the nation." 100% mask compliance at school drop-off this a.m. It works.
