The @wellcometrust is one of the wealthiest foundations in the world, spending more than a billion pounds a year. Now under a new strategy it will start to focus on three issues: infectious disease, mental health and the health effect of global warming.
In new strategy, Wellcome Trust will take on #globalhealth challenges - a strong signal to other foundations around the world that are still nationally focused @wellcometrust
While it’s great to see mental health and infectious diseases on the @wellcometrust agenda, where is the attention to #NCDs? The syndemic of #obesity, #diabetes, and #covid surely tells us that a more comprehensive approach is needed. #beatNCDs
Excited by working on intersections across our challenge areas of drawing on exciting insights from discovery research. #COVID19 has vividly demonstrated how they are inextricably linked and the need for holistic solutions.

Wellcome has a new strategy! 👏👏👏
Congratulations to all colleagues who've brought this to fruition - an exciting vision at a time when we urgently need research that will change people's lives
„If you look at any of the challenges we face, not just the three we’ve chosen but any of the others, then I think the answers do not lie in returning to a 20th century nationalistic agenda“, says @JeremyFarrar of @wellcometrust. Couldn‘t agree more.
"Outbreaks are “becoming larger, more frequent, and more complex,” a Wellcome spokesperson says, and so it will spend more money on researching neglected tropical diseases and pushing for “clinical trials with greater participant diversity.”
