Pope Francis declares support for same-sex civil unions for the first time as pope
Gay couples deserve legal protections for their relationships, Pope Francis said in a new documentary.
“Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family,” Pope Francis said. “They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable because of it.”

In a new documentary, Pope Francis backs civil unions for gay couples. "Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family,” he said. "What we have to create is a civil union law." My story
Also in this new documentary, Pope Francis condemns Trump's family separation policy for migrants, calling it "cruelty of the highest form." NBC reported yesterday that court-appointed lawyers can't find parents for more than 500 separated kids.
GROUNDBREAKING! #PopeFrancis declares support for same-sex civil unions, for the first time since becoming pope. This goes against most Catholic Churches worldwide. They opposed civil unions for LGBT+ couples
This, it seems to me, is also the doctrinally correct position, as a civil partnership/marriage holds no particular valence from a strict Catholic standpoint. The church, of course, can set up any requirements it wants for its own ceremonies.
