Ah no - James Randi has died, aged 92. Sad, but a hell of a life - from touring with @alicecooper to besting Houdini, & exposing fraud. This elven man cast a long shadow - my favourite Randi story is how he got a Nature paper (!) (1/n)
Very sad to hear that James Randi has died nytimes.com/2020/10/21/obiā¦
For a beautiful portrait of the man I recommend watching the documentary 'An Honest Liar'.
From the lede: ābamboozlement, bunco, chicanery, flimflam, flummery, humbuggery, mountebankery, pettifoggery and out-and-out quacksalvery.ā You have to keep reading after that!
James "the Amazing" Randi was a big influence on my burgeoning scepticism when I was a young bloke. I met him in 1995 and found him ... a little odd. But he was a very entertaining stage magician and (mostly) a good public advocate for sceptical thinking.
The world lost a giant in the fight against misinformation: nytimes.com/2020/10/21/obiā¦
James Randi made it his mission to bring scientific rationalism to people. What roiled his blood, and was the driving impetus of his existence, was pseudoscience, and its immoral irrationality. pic.twitter.com/iNqYechwli
RIP James!
In 1976, with the astronomer Carl Sagan, the writer Isaac Asimov and others, Mr. Randi founded what is now the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. @BTRadford
Wonderful (as usual) @margalitfox obituary of James Randi, magician and debunker of āsundry varieties of bamboozlement, bunco, chicanery, flimflam, flummery, humbuggery, mountebankery, pettifoggery and out-and-out quacksalvery.ā
@beyerstein RIP The Amazing Randi, "a father of the modern skeptical movement".

I had to think of your dad when I read this. Hope you''re ok, Lindsay.
āThese things used to be on the back of cornflakes boxes,ā Randi, his voice italic with derision, once told Larry King. āBut apparently some scientists either donāt eat cornflakes, or they donāt read the back of the box.ā RIP, Amazing Randi
And Margalit Fox is by far our most stylish obituary writer (I featured her obits of Dear Abby & Maurice Sendak in The Sense of Style.) James Randi, Magician Who Debunked Paranormal Claims, Dies at 92
James Randi, the great skeptic and magician, came to my course in Miami, and at our lunch, I suggested that he do a gig that afternoon. My students were amazed for his 30 minutes, and he gloriously reinforced the whereās-the-proof spirit of the course.
Though he remained a dyed-in-the wool rationalist to the last, Mr. Randi had a contingency plan for the hereafter. āI want to be cremated,ā he said. āAnd I want my ashes blown in Uri Gellerās eyes.ā
Randi joked that for a time, whenever he went out he carried a slip of paper recording that date X would be the day he dies. Sad to see he won the bet on 20 October
The Amazing Randi has died. š¢ He was both a magician and a skeptic, and his lifeās mission was to counter pseudoscience (including fooling scientists who had bad methodology). What an incredible life he lived, and what an impact he had!
James Randi, Magician Who Debunked Paranormal Claims, Dies at 92 | RIP James | I had the honor of interviewing him for my Science and Religion: 5 Questions book
What a wild, truly Amazing, life.
He and I got to talk about neuroscience and "bamboozlement, bunco, chicanery, flimflam, flummery, humbuggery, mountebankery, pettifoggery and out-and-out quacksalvery" in 2010. Smart, funny guy whose work will be missed.
RIP James Randi, committed debunker of supernatural claims, master of amazing parlor tricks.
My wife and I met him once, ever so briefly, at a party.
He cut quite a dashing figure.
I'm sorry to learn of the Amazing Randi's death. I'm certain I've never taught a Critical Thinking course without finding occasion to mention James Randi at some point.
