COMMENT: Why has Govt done so much less than promised? Simon Wilson's election challenge.
Simon WilsonThe things that are broken in this country sit far deeper than we like to think but that doesn't mean we can't fix them. My feature today is on the reasons govt progress is taking so long + what it means for election 2020. In @nzherald and premium online.
Editorial: Shifting to Northport may be a political ploy but that doesn't alter the facts.
Simon Wilson"The case for the move is now compelling" and "This could be the best gift ever - for Auckland, Northland and New Zealand." In its editorial today, @nzherald joins the call to move the Akl port (and no, I didn't write it!).
COMMENT: John Tamihere took Trumpian route to becoming Auckland mayor. Why didn't it work?
Simon WilsonTamihere Fletcher McCarten Boag: a new political supergroup or a double-blind date set up by a malfunctioning Tinder? My feature on JT’s Trumpish Akl mayoral campaign, in @nzherald Premium online and the paper today.
The fire began at lunchtime on a Tuesday and by home-time Auckland was at a standstill.
Simon WilsonHere it is: the fire, what happened and what now. Such excellent work by @kirsty_johnston and designers, motion graphics and photogs at @nzherald. In your paper tomorrow but this is online at it's best, there for everyone to read.
Comment: Always expect more from Government, never rely on it.
Simon WilsonJames Shaw scored an important victory yesterday and so did the coalition govt, despite what some say, but parliament ain't gonna get us there on its own. Here's my column on the new #ClimateChange deal, in @nzherald paper today and Premium online.
COMMENT: Auckland Council election is about making a city fit for purpose in 21st century.
Simon WilsonThis weekend is a very good time to vote! Because next week is getting late. There's so much at stake, not just with the mayor but wards and local boards too - they're incredibly important. I wrote about what's at stake in early September here (premium)
The Prime Minister has arrived in the small nation for the Pacific Islands Forum.
Simon WilsonThe story is not that Australians are offended at criticism because they elected a denialist govt. What do they expect? The story is that Pacific nations are drowning, as even small children understand: "Save Tuvalu to save the world." True that.
Comment: I believe National's plan to make climate change an election issue will hurt NZ.
Simon WilsonInteresting day. I can report we have 57 climate change deniers in NZ and I've heard from them all. Tbf, some are at pains to say they are "not climate change deniers but".
ICYMI, here's my column today on @NZNationalParty, vehicle and farm emissions
Cheaper public transport fares? The case for no is good but the case for yes is better.
Simon WilsonHey @phil_goff for the love of reason and hope, stop the carpark building on Bledisloe Wharf until we know if it's even going to be needed! In my @nzherald column today, along with call for lower fares and a shout out to great new Wynyard bridge.
New Canvas columnist Ashleigh Young on slightly better laughs
Simon Wilson"Chimpanzees, gorillas, dolphins and rats also laugh, but only when they're actually having fun."
Wait, what? Well she made me laugh. @ashleigh_young's wonderful new column in @NZHCanvas started today.
COMMENT: You don't have to be a cyclist to see how cycleways can help everyone.
Simon WilsonThis piece by @supergenericgal is just the best. The reason cycleways are "empty" is because they're efficient. We can't be the city we want to be if we don't start working towards it now. Of all things to hate cycleways should be really low on your list.
Forget the stadium, Ports of Auckland is building a carpark and hotel on Bledisloe Wharf.
Simon WilsonAuckland port is about to start building a car-park on Bledisloe Wharf that will scupper the stadium proposal and pre-empt both council planning for the area and govt planning for Upper North Island ports. My @nzherald column today
